Waiguoren on Rice: October 2013
http://waiguorenonrice.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
30 October, 2013. Aitch, Aay, Double El, Oh. Another month, another six blogs I didn’t write. Semester five is about halfway through, and at this point I’ve not written. In an embarrassingly long time. Not that it is any consolation, but I have thought about writing. In fact, I have two half-written blogs from this month taking up space on my hard drive. Waiguoren on Rice: July 2014

18 July, 2014. Goodbyes are hard. . I had a language tutor, Lily, who would give me a hard time for saying 再见. She very kindly called me dumb, and told me Chinese people don’t like to say zai jian. Is more colloquial, more common. I tried to explain that I couldn’t say “ baibai. 8221; It’s a loanword from English. In English I would never say “bye bye” to someone, so saying it with a Chinese accent just felt entirely foolish. . In hopes of changing my mind, Lily explained the denotation of zai jian.

04 September, 2013. One of the many lessons Peace Corps has taught me: America is weird. The Elkhart County Fair serves deep-fried butter. However, before I go on, I should back up…. Since the last time I posted something. 8212;at this point, some of you were probably thinking I forgot about this thing—I’ve had to make some decisions. Primarily, what will happen when I am through with my two-year Peace Corps commitment. Needless to say, I’m pretty excited about it. No joke. The weirdest. If someone threw...

Waiguoren on Rice: November 2012

03 November, 2012. My Own Hyperbole and a Half. This week, in my writing classes, I did a lesson on hyperbole. I discussed with my students the cultural trend in American English to be hyperbolic. They didn’t know the word, but when I wrote “hyperbole” on the board, they were familiar with it (I’m perpetually grateful at the level of my students English; the average PCV doesn’t teach students at this advanced of an ability). 18 December, 2012. December is for Creationism. I wrote this on the first day of December. I wanted to publish it as is, rather than editing it due to the delay in posting. Sorry about that, by the way; my VPN has been on the fritz lately. Enjoy! 160; * *. Don’t let this title alarm you. I’m not looking to have an evolution discussion, especially not here on my Chinablog (and besides, Bill Nye the Science Guy said it best. Instead, I want to talk about my own version of creationism…. 01 February, 2014. Zen, part Two. When we last left our hero, he was brimming with optimism—the hope of a pleasant vacation to recharge the proverbial batteries and reboot the proverbial operating system on the horizon. (Is it obvious I recently had to take my computer to the Apple Store? Alas, this happy ending was not in the cards…. That’s right. After writing. Well, I thought you’d never ask.
