My adventures in South Korea. Celebrating Lunar New Year 2013 in Shanghai. Seoraksan, Sokcho and Naksan October 2011. If you have decided that teaching English in South Korea is what you want to do, then a word of advice, you will need to be extremely organised and persistent to work your way through the visa process. South Korea has one of the strictest visa procedures in Asia, but once you get here it is well worth it! You will inevitably hear many horror stories about. Off purely based on hearsay....

Korea’s Collective Belly | The Culture Muncher
https://theculturemuncher.com/2013/06/27/koreas-collective-belly
An African in Asia. June 27, 2013. The best food and travel writers have taught us that regional cuisine is one of the ways in which culture is made manifest. Food is never simply fuel; it’s ritualistic by default. The way that it is prepared, served and eaten can reveal much about a nation’s histories and hierarchies. In South Korea, where collectivism is central to culture, food serves as a means to develop and fortify relationships. Eating together is one of the pathways to jeong. There is no direct t...

An African in Asia. How not to look like an idiot in Korea. January 23, 2014. Figure out the food. Don’t assume there will be a fork, a knife, or a salt shaker on the table. Do assume there will be some fabulous side dishes. Don’t be afraid to dive into them. Don’t use chopsticks to eat your rice. Don’t admit to hating kimchi. Not every tourist or expat likes it, and for some it takes getting used to. Don’t mistake tofu for feta. This unfortunate assumption has led many expats to harbour a festering hatr...

Adventures in Dunkelland
Living life in the beautiful PNW. Thursday, January 22, 2009. 1) This week-on-week-off thing isn't working for the children or me. 2) Ruthie is amazing. With her, my heart becomes open, I accept myself, and I become more centered. My soul needs nourishment from all directions: food, friendship, love, children, everything. I'm as hungry as hungry can be. This is disjointed, and I recognize that. So I will end on this lovely note by Dorothy Parker, whose acidity suits me to a tee these days. Teach the beli...
