Biblical Foundations

Friday, December 08, 2006. Theodicy has always been something I've been interested in, long before I knew it had a name. Raised in a Christian church, I've always had questions about the bad things that claim so many lives. Especially natural disasters or the horrible poverty in places like. And obviously not everyone who died in an earthquake or was starving in poverty was wicked and evil. I would ask why God would let such horrible things happen and nobody could answer to my satisfaction. When the spea...

Biblical Foundations: Movies and Religious Artifacts

http://www.amym211.blogspot.com/2006/12/movies-and-religious-artifacts.html

Friday, December 08, 2006. Movies and Religious Artifacts. The other night I was watching ". The movie, which is about the competition between Heaven and Hell for men's souls. And the 'Spear of Destiny' supposedly the spear which pierced Jesus’ side during the crucifixion was a major plot point as it supposedly still carried some of Jesus’ blood on the metal. Other 'artifacts' also played important roles in the storyline. So, I was thinking about how movies use biblical symbolism to carry their stories.

Biblical Foundations: The Patriarchs

http://www.amym211.blogspot.com/2006/12/patriarchs.html

Friday, December 08, 2006. Abraham is supposed to be this great patriarch, a faithful man of God. But the part of his story that most struck me is the part where he and Sarah go to. And he claims she's his sister. So, the Pharaoh takes Sarah into his house, and God afflicts Pharaoh and his people with great plagues. Later, Isaac does exactly the same thing with Rebecca. There seems to be no real purpose for their lies other than fear, and it is the other men who pay the price for the crime.

Biblical Foundations: Multiple Authorship

http://www.amym211.blogspot.com/2006/12/multiple-authorship.html

Friday, December 08, 2006. The fact that the Bible has multiple authors was not any big shocking revelation to me. Although I had been aware that most books in the New Testament were attributed to single authors, but I always just assumed the Old Testament books were compilations, mostly because they cover so much time and history. It seems ludicrous to attribute them to a single person. Of course, when I asked my parents what they thought, "Moses wrote the Pentateuch" was the answer I received.

It is difficult to locate in Western literature and history a more charismatic figure than David."- Harold Bloom, The Book of J (pg 41). Interestingly, throughout the book of Genesis, the theme of the second-born being preferred to the first-born crops up again and again. Cain kills his younger brother; why?

E-Journal for Biblical Foundations of Literature/English 211 at MSU with Dr. Sexson. Tuesday, September 26, 2006. Tuesday: September 26, 2006. To summaries quickly a part of what is happening in this particular story. Now if we take a quick look at the prophet Hosea. The original point I was trying to get at was that if Blake saw Albion married to Jerusalem then I see a parallel between Hosea being married to Israel. For both are marriages representative of place, and both are reflective of. Is a perfect...

E-Journal for Biblical Foundations of Literature/English 211 at MSU with Dr. Sexson. Tuesday, October 24, 2006. Is basically a form of commentary on the Jewish Religion. It goes greatly in depth and I suggest reading the link I have provided on the topic. There are 2 parts to the Talmud: The Mishnah. Which in Hebrew means repetition, and Gemara. Which means to complete or to study (according to wikipedia). These terms linked into today's discussion of "The Slave" by Isaac Bashevis Singer. 3 a : ONLY.

Kerry's Foundations of Biblical Literature Blog. Tuesday, December 05, 2006. Kairos as a contributor to the success of the Bible. Everything is governed by time in our lives. Lives are lived through time and time is often the deciding factor in how events occur in our lives. Frye says of time, Time is the fundamental category by which we perceive everything: we perceive nothing that is real except in time. Yet, for a concept that is so fundamental it seems to elude a common definition. The two sides of t...

http://kerry-eng211.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html

Kerry's Foundations of Biblical Literature Blog. Tuesday, September 26, 2006. For me, Jacob is the most fascinating of the patriarchs in Genesis. Jacob’s image changes so much over his lifetime that I sometimes do not think of him as a believable character. There is the phase of his life when he is connected with Esau and tries to take all of the privileges that are automatically given to Esau being the first born. Then there is Jacob at Laban’s when he meets Rachel and Leah. He comes out clutching Esau.

E-Journal for Biblical Foundations of Literature/English 211 at MSU with Dr. Sexson. Thursday, August 31, 2006. Thursday: August 31, 2006. Hello I think I'll start this with a quick disclaimer: This first entry will be short and sweet because I just typed out a whole long (rather witty) little number of a first entry and some how successfully made it disappear. So that's that. I'm really excited about the reading for this class. Some might think "The. And for now I'm off to more reading.
