Amy Whitehead's Research. The ecological musings of a conservation biologist. Three new papers: urban development, agriculture & skua. What do urban development, agriculture and skua have in common? Superficially very little, except that they feature in three papers that I published in the past few weeks. These papers are the culmination of research projects I worked on at Landcare Research. And the Quantitative and Applied Ecology group. At The University of Melbourne. DOI: 10.1111/conl.12260. There’s a...

Amy Whitehead's Research. The ecological musings of a conservation biologist. Remotely deleting files from R. Sometimes programs generate a LOT of files while running scripts. Usually these are important (why else would you be running the script? 8230;like watching orca swim past the hut window! The first step is to identify if there are any patterns in the file names that will help you remove only the files that you want to delete (and not the really important ones! In my case, all the file names to del...

Amy Whitehead's Research. The ecological musings of a conservation biologist. Goodbye Melbourne, hello (insert adventure here). As I shut down my laptop for the last time and handed back my office keys a couple of months ago, it was hard to believe that two and a half years earlier, I had packed up my life in shaky Christchurch and moved to Melbourne to start a one year contract with the Quantitative and Applied Ecology group. 8221; and “When can you start? Amy Whitehead's Research. The ecological musings of a conservation biologist. A day in the life of a penguin wrangler. Then it’s outside to start the day’s work. Until eventually you manage to outwit the bird. Once is tolerable but when you’re doing this for 8 hours or more a day, it can get pretty tedious. On the other hand, spending this much time walking around the colony means you get to see a lot of interesting things and take a lot of pictures. This year we’ve become masters of the scone and ...

34 things in photos – October. November 9, 2013. It’s been a pretty crazy month, with lots happening on the work front, but I managed to cross a few things of the list. The big challenge for October was wearing a dress every day, which turned out to not actually be that difficult. In fact, I think I have now trained myself out of being scared of dresses! We’ll see how long that lasts! Successfully completing Frocktober (#29). Papers accepted into journals ( I wrote about one over on my research blog.

June 9, 2013. We’ve had another great winter weekend in Christchurch. Crisp mornings, blue skies, and a southerly that kindly waited until Sunday afternoon to roll in. Today I walked into town to return some movies to Alice in Videoland. Pick up some new ones, and do some writing and thinking over coffee at C1 Espresso. Just a normal weekend for a twenty-something living on the outskirts of the city centre. Creepy heads keep watch on High Street. I was lucky. My house didn’t fall down. No o...I’ve ...

September 26, 2013. Investigative features take detective work. Walt Jabsco. Our final big assignment of the year is out of the way, and boy was it a doozy. We were tasked with writing an investigative feature, and while we had most of the year to work on it it will surprise no one that in true student fashion the last few weeks were hectic. I chose to delve into the changes at the Department of Conservation, and tried to unravel what those changes will actually mean for on-the-ground conservation. The k...
