The mission log of an alien on earth. Push where it gives, surrender where it doesn’t. Recent events have reminded me of that lesson again. I will not go into detail because the details do not matter. But the lesson remains. The way forward sometimes becomes obvious by discovering where the way forward does NOT lie. That’s better than me coming back to my room and finding something missing. That’s happened to many of my comrades over the years. Normally I don’t allow housekeeping into my room. I worry that they will want to hire us to try to meet their goal, instead of changing their goal. I do not enjoy kamikaze missions, and a kamikaze mission is what this project is, on its current timeline. We’ll see what happens. From → work. Larr; One of these things is not like the others. The mission log of an alien on earth. Don’t shoot the messenger, part 2. I gave a customer some bad news last week. To ease the pain, I worked up three scenarios:. The one they wanted, which is not possible. Another they didn’t want, which is better. Another they wanted even less, which is best. As I spoke to them, it became clear that they had already contemplated the less-desirable scenarios, and they agreed with my conclusions. So that was a nice surprise. All’s well that ends. It’s just work.

The mission log of an alien on earth. I felt an earthquake this morning. Since we live in a very geologically stable area, I thought it was odd. Two gentle thumps through the ground, separated by perhaps five seconds. Nothing rattled in the house, so it was very minor. Had I not been motionless, I would not have felt it at all. It could have been a “ skyquake. 8221; caused by Martian ships or various Earth-based spy craft. It could have been an aftershock from the Nepal quake. From → events.

Friday, December 31, 2010. A Bitter Sweet Year! 2010 is almost over and I for one cannot be happier. This has been a year of ups and downs. Very downs. Most of you know that in April of this year I had spinal surgery which I blogged about here Blue Herons. Unfortunately in September I went for a routine mammogram and was diagnosed with breast cancer which I blogged about The Impact of A Word - A Few Mountains to Climb. For a week I could live in denial. I made the most of it! All too soon my trip was over.

Finally the ski hill on Mt. Washington, a half hour away, has enough snow to open for the season, but I don't ski so that is not a comfort for me. But I decided that I would leave early and drive about 25 minutes farther north to a place called Salmon Point. It turned out to be a great walk and a beautiful night there.

The mission log of an alien on earth. An acquaintance has begun having “episodes.” That’s British for “heart attack.” It’s not his first encounter with such issues. He had some very large number of bypasses more than a decade ago, and he adopted a super-healthy lifestyle. So the last decade has been a gift, really. He has been living on borrowed time. We visited him in the hospital and brought him a “get well” card. Darling wife asked me what we should write in it. Oh well, at least he got the joke.
