A leader’s scrapbook. January 15, 2015. 8220;You are a puritan: you neither drink nor womanise. Such men are dangerous.” Gales of laughter ensued when the late writer Khushwant Singh observed thus in his characteristic irreverent humour to Lal Krishna Advani. Even at the age of 86 today, he continues to reap his fair share of opprobrium. He had till very recently carped about Narendra Modi’s inimitable position in the party and country. Fame) To place it in context, the film. Those were the days when he ...

https://arundhatibasu.wordpress.com/2015/06/19/the-hanseatic-sojourn-iii
The Hanseatic Sojourn – III. June 19, 2015. Bremen was the last city on the trail. The smallest land in Deustchland the Free and Hanseatic city of Bremen certainly is yet it as free-thinking as Hamburg and eclectic to boot. Roselius, the inventor of decaffeinated coffee, was an interesting baron. The Light Bringer is rather startling. The 30 Messein China bells of the Glockenspiel. People started coming together to watch and record the little spectacle. It almost had us in a state of trance. The ...And I...

About | The Told and the Untold
https://arundhatibasu.wordpress.com/about
When I write, I just forget the world. I just keep writing till I have got what I want. I write when I am happy, I write when I am a little blue, I write when I am contemplating something new, I write in those rare times when ennui sets in. And, I read. I read and read till the words start haunting me. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:. Address never made public). A Sardinian Saga | The Told and the Untold
https://arundhatibasu.wordpress.com/2015/05/27/a-sardinian-saga
May 27, 2015. The cylindrical tower is a nuraghi, ancient megalithic towers, typical to Sardinia. Vendettas and violence have long vanished from the inland villages of Sardinia. Or so I was told as I was driven around hairpin turns and bends up hilly roads to an inland village of shepherds called Orgosolo. My imagination was hooked and my sense of adventure stoked. Century, Sardinia feels dissociated from the Italian mainland. The bandit-cum-hero in Enza’s story was Orgosolo’s famous resident Graziano Me...

The Hanseatic Sojourn – II. June 8, 2015. Mercury. His bums are indeed fetching. Alongside the Holstentor the gabled brick fronts of the Salzspeicher (salt warehouses) line up along the Upper Trave and look as pretty as a picture. They date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. An Isle of Mist | The Told and the Untold
https://arundhatibasu.wordpress.com/2014/09/02/an-isle-of-mist
An Isle of Mist. September 2, 2014. An archipelago off the west coast of mainland Scotland, the Inner Hebrides is home to the spectacular Skye, apart from a swathe of other isles. Even the most bombastic adjectives fall short once you hit the remote isle while driving down the road from the Kyle of Lochalsh. Adding a startling quotient to the isle’s dramatic landscape of miles and miles of bleak moors, beautiful lochs and white sandy beaches are the misty Cuillin Hills. The Black Cuillin hills. This was ...

https://arundhatibasu.wordpress.com/2015/06/02/the-hanseatic-sojourn-i
The Hanseatic Sojourn – I. June 2, 2015. The Schnoor, Bremen. I was on the sets of a film. A heroine treading the cobbled stones of the alleys, flanked by medieval half-timbered houses to the strains of Sinatra wafting in the cold evening air. It was a moment that demanded to be stuck in. I had just chanced upon the old. Quarter in Bremen and could not stop gaping (mentally, sister! At its medieval beauty. The Hanseatic League or the Hansa came to power in the 13th century as a protector of its network o...

The D-Word | The Told and the Untold

June 18, 2014. Ananda in the Himalayas. It has such a powerful quotient. Say detox and you have half the world’s attention ‘tis the panacea to the ills of modern living. Binge for days on end and sign up for days or weeks of detoxification. It is almost like waiting for magic to happen. And the cycle goes on. You might bite out aghast. I had a similar reaction. Where I come from, in Calcutta, no Bengali can imagine sitting for a meal where everything is uncooked. I can imagine my parents baul...I did ask...

Of Purple Towns and Sweet Delight | The Told and the Untold
https://arundhatibasu.wordpress.com/2014/09/08/of-purple-towns-and-sweet-delight
Of Purple Towns and Sweet Delight. September 8, 2014. There are some places on earth that defy the senses. Others that pop right out of a fantasy. The twee town of Bournville in England fits snugly into both brackets, because believe it or not, its very existence is pivoted upon chocolate. It is where Bournville, the plain dark bar of chocolate that comes in a signature blood-red packaging, gets its name. The ticket checker took one look at our tickets and grinned at us, You are off to Cadbury World, eh?
