A Bumpy Path: September 2013
http://bumpypath.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
A moment that changed everything. Yellowed pages stained by cigarette smoke, broken spine from laying open face down, curled corners and smudged fingerprints throughout, the book settled into my hand for reading just as I settled in most nights; alone, in bed, curled up to wait for sleep to come. The opposing page was blank. I turned the page to find another blank page, and on the opposing page was:. Das Energi, by Paul Williams. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). An intense, sometimes neurotic, always joyous t...

A Bumpy Path: Time to tell the story
http://bumpypath.blogspot.com/2013/01/time-to-tell-story.html
Time to tell the story. To recap, back in March of 2012, I was jaundiced and finally managed to get an ERCP scheduled. I was terrified, drugged, sometimes hallucinating, very depressed and in the dark about what was going on, what had happened, and what would happen. Finally, I broke and demanded to be discharged. “We’re just monitoring you anyway, so we’ll send you home.” Wonderful. At the end of April, I went home. Time to tell the story. Tim has been amazing through this whole ordeal. He saved my ...

A Bumpy Path: A Symbol of Life
http://bumpypath.blogspot.com/2009/05/symbol-of-life.html
A Symbol of Life. You know you have just experienced something profound when you find it impossible to describe. With some time, you might find weak comparisons, analogies, that give a sort-of idea, but you're never able to capture the experience 100 percent. Symbolism, in its many forms, can fill in the gaps, and finding the symbolism within an experience can form a foundation within which can be built on for all of your life. That exists, even though we can't see it. Of what we actually are. It is unse...

A Bumpy Path: Murphy is losing!
http://bumpypath.blogspot.com/2014/01/murphy-is-losing.html
Murphy's Law: If something can go wrong, it will. That's been my luck in both small and big things; inconsequential and monstrously important. For the majority of my life, Murphy and I have been close. It's been the norm, and I was used to it. I adopted a positive attitude anyway. I might as well. I can't dance, but I sure made the music along the way. I'm having a heart attack! Heat in my car, no heart attack, no allergic reaction and a scan ran in cut time. Not bad, Murphy. Not bad at all. I have a wor...

A Bumpy Path: From Terror to Life
http://bumpypath.blogspot.com/2013/08/from-terror-to-life.html
From Terror to Life. A first year resident was assigned to my team of doctors, and she was great. We talked a lot. She said that she took her power as a doctor to heart and had a woman bring in a dog for me to pet and be with. When she did that, I wrote on the white board "thank you for all you've done for me.". I am set free. From Terror to Life. Everywhere I turned during the whole ordeal was positive people, people who thought nothing of doing what it took to take care of me emotionally as well as phy...

A Bumpy Path: Never snub your nose at Murphy
http://bumpypath.blogspot.com/2014/01/never-snub-your-nose-at-murphy.html
Never snub your nose at Murphy. So, now it's Murphy - 1 and me - 1, if we're keeping score. When it comes to this illness, I guess it's a good thing that there's a score to keep, right? I share this with you, with the whole wide world, on this blog because 1.) it fits the name of the blog (whoda thought I'd be foreseeing the future when I started it so many years ago? Never snub your nose at Murphy. I share this with you, with the whole wide world, on this blog because 1.) it fits the name of the blo...

A Bumpy Path: Ban More Cruel Than Horse Slaughter
http://bumpypath.blogspot.com/2008/06/ban-more-cruel-than-horse-slaughter.html
Ban More Cruel Than Horse Slaughter. There are currently 9.2 million horses in the US, and 2 million people own horses, according to the American Horse Council. A recent Time article. Highlights the conditions of unwanted horses and the impact of the slaughter ban; and how people within the horse industry perceive the current state of affairs: "People who protest slaughter ought to have a bunch of these old horses starving to death in their back yards.". I’m curious how you can say horses are lives...

A Bumpy Path: How to Make Your Content Attractive and Effective
http://bumpypath.blogspot.com/2008/10/how-to-make-your-content-attractive-and.html
How to Make Your Content Attractive and Effective. You've read all the rest, now read about the 'why' and 'what for' behind design concepts. Surprisingly, what you see on a web page or blog follows the same tried and true rules that were developed for print eons ago. Way back when editors "marked up" copy for typesetters is when the concept of consistent uses of fonts, font sizes and blocks of print became known as style sheets. It's the content that draws the readers in, and good content keeps the reade...
