Biking from California to Argentina. Perú- disappearing into thin air and mountains of gold. 5 years ago I came to Peru and managed a marathon of terrain in a series of planes, trains and autos. Nazca lines, Titicaca, Valle Sagrada, Ica. It was formative in planting the seed of wanderlust fruition. I hung my head out the window on a particularly barfy drive and saw a guy beasting a hill on a loaded bicycle, I thought…. I want that, someday that will be me. The road connecting the 2 lagunas. The road down...

Viaje a Sudamérica en la primera mitad del 2014. cesarmarteltf@gmail.com. San Pedro a Uyuni. San Pedro a Uyuni.

Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle. The Land of Plenty. August 31, 2016. Our return to Massachusetts is timed with a scheduled family vacation to Cape Cod. I haven’t been in years, and Tyndall never has. We walk the dunes on the oceanside and the trails on the bayside, convincing the family daily ice cream stops are good for them. The mercury steadily rises as the week progresses, but the breeze does its job. We harvest and process and eat and repeat. Photo by Tyndall Ellis. A lady tells me her b...

Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle. July 23, 2016. At the bakery we meet a cyclist from Sao Palo. Last night, one from California. There’s only a couple ways to the border between Peru and Ecuador and this is one of them. We leave San Ignacio and some how manage the 108 kilometers to Bellavista. The road is downhill and almost flat in some spots. I don’t know the last time we covered this many kilometers in one day. Mexico, perhaps. In Leymebamba we stay a day. As the crow flies, it’s less ...

Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle. Liz and I have spent a large amount of time over the years trimming weight and lightening our load. Trimming weight from our packs has allowed us to explore remote Alaska on foot. Trimming weight from our lives has enabled us to take off on a two year journey exploring the entire western hemisphere by bike. Fast and light is the name of the game. I’ve been told that one packs their fears. Let go of your fears and lighten your load. Installed a Reba RL front sho...

Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle. Massachusetts to Virginia, sort of. October 28, 2016. October 28, 2016. In September we rode to Burlington to see Leah and Nick. This month we cross paths with Keith and Leeann and their three boys near Lake Placid. All these Alaskans are on the east coast. When darkness sets in up north, it’s time to go south. Leaving friends behind, we have good intentions of making a large detour to ride a section of the TATR. Soon, we are tootling west on the C&O Canal trai...

Looking at life from the seat of a bicycle. Spin Class on the Salars. December 11, 2016. We arrived in Sabaya yesterday and meant to leave today. All packed up and ready to go, we stall. Everything is a little crisp: lips, noses, ears, the sun toasts it all. Instead of leaving, we stay. We spend the afternoon working our way through a soccer ball sized papaya. In Challacollo I collapse in the late afternoon shade of an old building. We don’t need to go any farther today. Tyndall spots an ab...In Virginia...
