A Quietness Distilled – Embracing Quirky
https://annikaclark.wordpress.com/2017/01/06/a-quietness-distilled
January 6, 2017. March 7, 2017. If I closed my eyes, the funeral might have felt like any other day in December. Oils and incense burned throughout the church, filling my head with that smell of Christmas. Except it wasn’t quite Christmas yet, only the 10. Her eyes, her eyes, they’re so swollen, Owen, what am I gonna do? Ma drank none of her coffee that morning, and Lynda passed in the afternoon. We were not in the room. The Lord of hosts. The priest yawned,. Funerals were a funny thing to me. I wond...

Map of Town After You – Embracing Quirky
https://annikaclark.wordpress.com/2016/12/24/map-of-town-after-you
Map of Town After You. December 24, 2016. March 7, 2017. I opened the passenger side door to my car, and it smelled exactly like chocolate orange slices and that one pair of flip flops you left in the glovebox. I sat in the driver’s seat with my head on the steering wheel, questioning why you didn’t do more of the driving and I didn’t leave a box of tissues on the all-weather floor mats. I scraped my door on the neighbor’s mailbox, imagined you chuckling at me, and then I got sad thinking about that.

Poems: October (2016) – Embracing Quirky
https://annikaclark.wordpress.com/2016/10/30/poems-october-2016
October 30, 2016. March 7, 2017. A poem about a place I’ve never been (inspired by John’s photos):. No internet, only connection. Our playing cards blowing around. Like dried pine needles in the mid-October wind. Shakespeare between the majestic redwoods,. Paying tribute to bears and kings and evil witches. Playing jesters on our tiptoes as the autumn falls from summer,. But is not yet polluted by the frosty fingers of winter. You pull the funniest faces this side of the sunset. We are free here,. Their ...

giant: a poem by me – Embracing Quirky
https://annikaclark.wordpress.com/2016/10/26/giant-a-poem-by-me
Giant: a poem by me. October 26, 2016. March 7, 2017. I am extremely nervous for someone as big as me. Almost nervous enough to fill up the room. I am not a gentle giant, but a shaky giant. For someone with as many limbs as me, i do not stretch. My friends are small, delicate, grass-like, and ready for crushing. When i look down from great heights, they are ready for squishing. There are two kinds of people i can love, and both are small. I am actually rather small for someone so big. To carry the sky.

Storm Problems – Embracing Quirky
https://annikaclark.wordpress.com/2016/09/22/storm-problems
September 22, 2016. March 7, 2017. Nothing is working right. The Internet is slow when we are all on it at the same time. The football game glitches and the recordings aren’t starting. Our lights flickered when we opened the microwave. And mom said the freezer is slowly thawing. The washing machine stopped. The water heater stopped. The blow dryer stopped while Grace had her head upside down. So I’ve made an executive decision to give up. To bring out the candles. And instead of playing the piano.

Occasional Urban Cyclist – Embracing Quirky
https://annikaclark.wordpress.com/2016/09/08/occasional-urban-cyclist
September 8, 2016. March 7, 2017. Orange traffic cones line the roads of town. They direct trucks, cars, and minivans to follow a narrow path in front of them. They discourage turning off-road, changing lanes, hesitation, and erratic steering. Fortunately, I was not driving a truck, car, or minivan. Willowbrook was a wide, gravel road, graced with well-spread houses of various shades of beige and gray. To clarify the era of this street, I will give this example:. I thought I would eventually get home....

Dear Summer: The 1st Anniversary – Embracing Quirky
https://annikaclark.wordpress.com/2016/08/26/dear-summer-the-1st-anniversary
Dear Summer: The 1st Anniversary. August 26, 2016. March 7, 2017. Alternate Title –. Learn: Life in August. One of my favorite finds while reading back was a slideshow in my first Dear Summer. The picture showed me and Brendon climbing on rocks over a mountain creek (he was not yet my brother-in-law.) The caption read He helped me across the rocks. He’s alright. That day hiking Stanley Canyon seems like a distant memory, not a one-year memory. Perks of Being a Wallflower. To continue the tradition of ins...
