Education Epiphanies: October 2016

Friday, 28 October 2016. Podcasts - More fun than Nickelback. My husband thinks I am a bit loony for running while listening to podcasts. How is that fun? He asks, while searching the radio for a Nickelback clip. Nickelback. I kid you not. Podcasts are interesting because you can pick your topic and listen to one or a series, with all the imagination you require to read a book. Except your hands are free to type, wash dishes, run, or change the radio station. Here is a link. Care to make your own podcast?

Education Epiphanies: November 2016

Wednesday, 23 November 2016. Twitter vs RSS: Showdown at 11. I never got into RSS feeds, mainly because I think they were a thing before I cared enough about the Internet to use it to my advantage. I don't know if it is the dynamic status of the web or the clunky user interface, or anxiety of worrying I'll feel bad about missing something if it is hand delivered that kept me from buying in, but either way I have never been an RSS gal. Education Epiphanies: March 2016

Thursday, 10 March 2016. Self-directed / Transformational / Experiential Learning. I know I was only supposed to write on one of the three types of learning, but this article on transformative learning was so great. When I first read about transformative writing in the text it grabbed my attention and inspired me to want and strive for this type of learning in my classroom. Can we influence people into a deeper sense of change by what we teach? Kolb's four-stage learning model. Experience based, self-dir...

Education Epiphanies: The Medium is the Message
http://educationepiphanies.blogspot.com/2016/11/the-medium-is-message.html
Wednesday, 9 November 2016. The Medium is the Message. I forgot about the phrase, The Medium is the Message, having last heard it in university. At the time we were discussing two things, on two separate occasions:. In a political journalism class we were discussing the upcoming Internet popularity as a medium for discourse (yes, I was in university that long ago); and,. Each medium, independent of the content it mediates, has its own intrinsic effects which are its unique message," he said. So what does...

Wednesday, 23 November 2016. About the MooCs . Andrew Shiva / Wikipedia, via Wikimedia Commons. Oxford University has finally released its first Massive Open Online Course. How will these courses be delivered? The masses wonder, and more interestingly: how will we keep an eye on students? Truth be told, the progress this indicates is a sign of the times- learning is taking new shapes and new faces and will continue to innovate as part of the human experience. Friday, 22 July 2016. 3250 Digital Project Review - Poster Sessions. John Boulton's digital project on poster sessions was well organized and thorough. His material had a natural flow that moved through the definition to examples to a comprehensive checklist of steps for follow through - all supported by the concrete example of John's own classroom and techniques. Overall, I thought this was a great project and enjoyed its simplicity and thorough, natural flow. Take a look for yourself:. Besides feeling ...

Education Epiphanies: Social Media: It Is What It Isn't

Thursday, 17 November 2016. Social Media: It Is What It Isn't. I believe in silver linings. Passionate Eye on CBC hosts "The Choice.". Photo courtesy of CBC. Anyhoo, on election night I was in Toronto at a reception for a tradeshow and among contrived "networking" discussions, I noticed more than half the room was on their phones for a noticeable amount of time and after casually sauntering up next to people at the cheese table, pretending to reach for the jalapeno jack, I saw they were refreshing Twitte...

Education Epiphanies: January 2016

Sunday, 31 January 2016. Characteristics of Adult Learners - Passionate, Precise, and Practical. Malcolm Knowles developed a six-point list outlining characteristics of adult learners:. Takes Knowles' six-item list a little deeper and expands the notions in practical terms, but essentially develops the same picture of a focused, practical learner with a lifetime of experience behind him or her, and an eye on the prize of skill development and self-direction. Demonstrates how some learners are sold short.
