I’m a hands-on Garden Consultant and I love plants and getting dirty, I wear well worn Blundstone boots and my Bisley shirt and each morning I transform from Mum of three to Tradie hop into my little Ford ute and drive off to work and I love it! I love creating gardens which invite nature in, as well as offering a wonderful Ahhh it’s good to be home zone for my clients. These days I live in Perth on the other side of the country, with my wonderful husband and three children and a silly rescue Labradoodle...
15 Mins Projects | Andrea Whitely

Who says you’re not creative! I created this lovely Terracotta Tower in under 15 minutes and you can to. 1 x Piece of Rio-length of your choice-this one is 1.5m long. 5 x Terracotta pots-1 large and 4 smaller but all the same size. 1 x bag 30l potting mix. 1x bag water saving mulch. 5 x plants – I chose a mixture of succulents and a lovely Calibrachoa in the bottom one. I was inspired by the notion of a bottle tree and so topped it off with a pretty bottle from IKEA repurposed form my 50th birthday party.

March 3, 2017. March 4, 2017. No need to “over-winter” potted plants Down Under. Unlike our Northern Hemisphere garden friends we are so lucky here in Perth that we don’t need to over-winter our potted plants, we don’t need to bring all our pot plants in out of the snow and cold weather. In some places, they go to a lot of trouble for garden specimens and potted plants. Check out these beauties, they’re under cover for the winter. Bring out the scissors, this ugly leaf is coming off. It’s really ea...

Ooh look! | Andrea Whitely

What I’ve always found interesting in gardens is looking at what people choose to plant there. What they put in. What they leave out. One small choice and then another, and soon there is a mood, an atmosphere, a series of limitations, a world. Los Angeles Getty Museum. Los Angeles County Natural History Museum. The Huntington, Pasadena. Los Angeles County Arboretum. New York Botanic Gardens A Sneak Peek into Frida’s backyard. Andrea in the Big Apple. What are you looking for? Get social with me!

A Wonderful Dilemma.Part 2. Faced with the wonderful dilemma of having to choosing what type of tree to plant, I have began to go through the list of candidates - listing their positives and sometimes the negatives. As much as I love this small tree, I will probably look for something that will grow a little taller. Another of my favorite imports from Australia, Willow Acacia offers bea...

Why Do Cactus Have Spines? What comes to mind when you think of cactus? Perhaps the first thing you think of are its spines. If you have ever been unfortunate enough to have been pricked by a cactus, you'll likely never forget that most of them have spines. Did I ever tell you about the time I was working along a golf course landscape and backed into a teddy bear cholla and got an entire piece lodged in the back of my leg? Golden Barrel (Echinocactus grusonii). The shade provided by the spines helps to l...

http://www.azplantlady.com/p/growing-roses-in-desert.html
Growing Roses in the Desert. My love affair with roses began in earnest when my husband and I moved into our first home in Phoenix. I inherited a garden with three old rose bushes, which I soon increased to 40 - yes, I said 40 roses! Although my current garden has fewer roses, I still love them as much as I did. Growing roses in the desert is both easier and harder then in other climates. Below, are a series of rose-themed blog posts, which I hope will help you grow beautiful roses in the desert southwest.
