Andrew Barnes Jamieson's Blog. Just another WordPress.com site. The beginnings of “dos mil once” →. December 24, 2010. I wish you all a Feliz/Merry Christmas/Navidad from Guatemala! Christmas parties) to exchange gifts. But some things are not quite like the Christmases I am used to. It is slightly colder now than it was when I came, which means maybe it gets down to 50 degrees rather than 60. Not exactly Chicago Christmas weather! Most of all, I am used to seeing my US family for Christmas! Actually, mo...

Andrew Barnes Jamieson's Blog. Just another WordPress.com site. Monthly Archives: February 2011. The beginnings of “dos mil once”. February 9, 2011. In English I say “two thousand eleven,” (or simply write 2011), although I admit I have heard this year referred to just about exclusively in Spanish, so for all I know, they are saying something different back home; perhaps something … Continue reading →. Going where they lead. What Ill be doing in Guatemala. Tuesday, December 28, 2010. Some things require two tries… but they’re definitely worth it! Before Christmas, I shared my excitement over learning how to play in Xela. I love it! A part of my playing turned into volcano climbing. There’s a 3500 meter volcano that you can see from outside my window of my room. It haunts me, calls to me, and dares me to go visit it. So, I finally did. Twice. Quiet morning from the volcano. Carlos and I on the descent.

Thursday, August 26, 2010. Sorry for the delay. This address can be used to send "non-valuable and non-urgent" items. If you send a box it will stop in Guatemala City, be taxed, and wait and wait and wait for me to come and pick it up. :) But the puffy manila envelopes should make it through. You can expect it to take 10 days (usually) to 3 weeks (occasionally). In other words, the postal system runs on "Guatemalan time". The Gift of The Cloud. But with the exception of today, it's been unusually cloudy.

Thursday, June 30, 2011. I've been learning Spanish for a loooooong time, and man, would Ms. Nobles be proud to see where I've gotten after those first few, rocky years. And still, every once in a while, a word or saying grabs me by the heart or makes my ears perk up in curiosity. So, I thought I would share a few of my favorites. This is just my favorite Spanish word. It means bubbles, and it's fun to say. Burbujas. This is an oldie, but goodie. Me encanta chocolate. Me encanta la playa. Basically just ...

Going where they lead. What Ill be doing in Guatemala. Sunday, January 6, 2013. Just this week, in a conversation with a friend, I espoused my theory that 95% of this world's issues are based upon poor, or a complete lack of, communication. If you are not communicating your needs with one another, there can never be a compromise that helps everyone succeed at this thing we are all in together - life. Our habits and desires should never, ever, come above the needs for basic survival for hundreds of thousa...

Going where they lead. What Ill be doing in Guatemala. Saturday, July 28, 2012. One's love for a country has a loud and distinct cry, and after 10 months of being away, I just had to go back. So that's what I did the last two weeks of June and first week of July! College Place Presbyterian was kind enough to allow me to go on a mission trip with them and the blending of two of my most formative adult life experiences (my time at CPPC and my time in Guatemala) was incredibly healthy and revitalizing.

Andrew Barnes Jamieson's Blog. Just another WordPress.com site. August 7, 2011. I have to remind myself that my year will still be valuable even if not all of my expectations will be met. And that expectations others had for me, despite my best intentions, might not be met. Disappointment is inevitable, but certainly occupies a prominent spot on the unpleasant side of my wide range of departure-related emotions. The keyboard the music kids made for me on my last day. Researching Dr.s Barnett
Researching Dr.s Barnett. A communication tool for our friends and family. Sunday, May 16, 2010. The overnight train to Xi'an was an experience in and of itself. We shared a car with a Chinese couple who seemed to announce their every mundane action with a loud hack, cough, yawn, sigh, you name it! Despite these pronouncements, the train ride was quite soothing with the beautiful country landscape passing by. We also went to visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a Buddhist pagoda built in the Tang Dynasty.
