Bach Suite Project: March 2008
http://josephinevanlier.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 24, 2008. The Violoncello Piccolo is ready! I just heard from Ifshin that my piccolo cello is ready! I am going to pick it up mid April! As soon as I have it, you will hear all about it. I can hardly wait. If it is as good as the baroque cello that I have from them, I will be in for a treat! The recording with the Strathcona String Quartet is done. We did a day of recording today. Try playing jazz music at 8 AM on a holiday Monday! I changed strings on both cellos. I thought I had decided t...

Bach Suite Project: The Concerts
http://josephinevanlier.blogspot.com/2009/05/after-concerts.html
Friday, May 15, 2009. I have now performed the six suites entirely five times in the past month. And I am still as excited and humbled as I was when I started this. Perhaps even more so! Convocation Hall at the University of Alberta). Warming up before a concert). I was wrong: audiences came in very large numbers at every concert and most stayed through the entire performances! About 25 people came to all four complete performances, even! Robertson Wesley United Church). All Saints' Anglican Cathedral).

Bach Suite Project: July 2009
http://josephinevanlier.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
Friday, July 10, 2009. The Recording of the 6 suites. This July, I recorded Bach's six suites and two "bonus suites", (in other words; 8 suites! I recorded the suites the same way that I had performed them in six concerts across Alberta in April and May:. Suites 1 and 4 on my 1870 Mirecourt,. Suites 2 and 5 on the baroque cello, tuned to A=415 (suite 5 with a scordatura, in this suite that means that the a string is tuned down to g),. Suite 3 on the Luis and Clark Carbon Fibre cello, and finally. But bef...

Bach Suite Project: February 2008
http://josephinevanlier.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 24, 2008. It has been almost 3 months since my last post, and so much has happened since! I received a subsistence grant from the Edmonton Arts Council. It makes me really happy, because this project is turning out to be more costly in many ways, than I ever imagined! Receiving this grant means I can breathe a little bit easier, at least for a little while. I am applying for more grants and will need to find a few more ways to help me fund this project (any ideas? During the past few mon...

Bach Suite Project: March 2009
http://josephinevanlier.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 7, 2009. To perform from memory, or not? With the performances just around the corner, I can not tell you how many people have asked if would be performing the six suites from memory. Let me begin by saying that I strongly believe that in order to perform a piece well, one should know it from memory in all of its details. However. should one always perform it without the music at least nearby? I have decided that I will NOT perform the suites from memory! I think that this way I. When I a...

Bach Suite Project: November 2007
http://josephinevanlier.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 16, 2007. The Roller Coaster Continues. A difficult decision has made been made. Andrew Carruthers Cello 44. Let's start last week. As you know, I had fallen head over heals in love with the Carruthers cello. A great instrument. The quartet loved it, I certainly did. And still do. I took my old Mirecourt out of his case again. Was I going to give up? The Mirecourt has a very special sound. Rich, warm and something else magical. The carbon fibre cello is a great "work horse". I played bot...
