Just ask this (social) scientician. Posted by: Jenn Deering Davis. January 4, 2011. Small talk sucks, or how to have a conversation with anyone. I have a PhD in Communication, am an experienced public speaker, and love being the center of attention. But I’ve always hated making small talk with people I just met. First, some background. But I’ve never heard stats like that about conversational communication. But there’s something particularly intimidating about those kinds of networking events. Limate ...

Candid Communication: My Letter to the President
http://candidcommunication.blogspot.com/2009/01/my-letter-to-president.html
Tuesday, January 20, 2009. My Letter to the President. It is not an easy task, but what comforts me is that you admittedly know this and understand your role as head of state. I do not envy you this task, but I promise (with my fellow brothers and sisters) to support and respect your decisions as well as attempt to fulfill my role as a law-abiding citizen of this great state. Sarah H. Michel 1/20/2009. I was just thinking to myself, "Sarah hasn't blogged in awhile." Low and behold. LOVE YOU!

Candid Communication: Beating vs. Cheating
http://candidcommunication.blogspot.com/2008/10/beating-vs-cheating.html
Tuesday, October 14, 2008. Beating vs. Cheating. My aunt came up with this question and I think it's a good one to ask in order to stimulate some conversation. Let's hope that none of us ever have to personally deal with any of these issues but based on statistics, we might. Is it worse for a husband to beat his wife, or a wife to cheat on her husband? I don't know, somebody more astute could probably explain why. October 26, 2008 at 2:23 PM. October 27, 2008 at 2:15 PM. Main reasons for that. 2 the fact...

Candid Communication: March 2008

Monday, March 24, 2008. The War in Iraq. I distinctly remember walking on campus having an argument with a friend about the possibility of going to war in Iraq. You remember that time, after 9/11 where the Anti-terrorism campaign began and the only time Iraq was used in a sentence, you would hear it linked with WMD. Man, we've come a long way from there-or have we? Number of U.S. military personnel. Who have died as a result of the war. Who have died as a result of the war. Links to this post.

Candid Communication: June 2008
http://candidcommunication.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 16, 2008. A week left in Port Said. Our time in Port Said serving at the Holy Family Shelter and living at the Good Shepard school and convent are coming to an end. We've had so much fun here and have been stretched inexpressibly and have tangible ways to think and pray about this place and the country of Egypt as a whole. From Mariam. Once she gets across she screams in English, "Did you just see what happened? The freedom in America I have experienced all my life is something I will rememb...

Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Red Line Metro Crash. There's a silence uncharacteristic of Washington D.C. purveying the streets today. The buses are full, metro is empty yet the common understanding innate in the human spirit causes people to acquiesce, remaining patient as the city adjusts to the tragedy of yesterday. Most are probably thinking, "It could have been me." I know I am. This is the third Metro crash in the past 15 years in Washington D.C. This accident could and should have been avoided, how can ...

Monday, February 25, 2008. The Health Snare of Health Care produces a Health Scare. To be exact. I had a brief brush with our health care system this weekend, and now I remember why I'm reluctant to pop a pill when I'm not feeling well. Let me explain, and I should also preface this blog by saying I'm currently reading The Maker's Diet. And Mountains beyond Mountains. I drive her to Westlake Medical Center and we walk into the emergency room-yes I realize it wasn't an emergency, but this was her only opt...

Candid Communication: July 2009

Tuesday, July 14, 2009. Ode to Bastille Day. Happy Bastille Day people! IF you ever go to France, learn this phrase which means, "Do you speak English? To really make the French love Americans more than they already do. ;). 3 years ago today I was in Paris reaping the immediate benefits of the French national holiday commemorating the 1790 Fête de la Fédération. Held on the first anniversary of the. Storming of the Bastille. Fortress prison on 14 July 1789. Benefits including free entrance into the Louvre.
