Ski. Run. Climb. Repeat.

Ski Run. Climb. Repeat. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. I stopped in the Tetons for a few days on the drive home (to Missoula) from the Wind Rivers. The weather was fairly wet and stormy but I did manage to sneak in a summit of the Grand on my final day there. Day 1 – I ran a fairly flat 11mi loop around Jenny and String lakes. Lots of folks on the trail (which frequently interrupted the continuity of the run) but great to get out and stretch the legs regardless. Thanks to Jason Dorais. I continued on alone,...

Ski. Run. Climb. Repeat.: Wind River Climbing Part I

http://www.andrewmayer.blogspot.com/2015/08/wind-river-climbing-part-i.html

Ski Run. Climb. Repeat. Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Wind River Climbing Part I. Cirque of the towers from the summit of mitchell. The next day, we decided to get on the classic E ridge of Wolfs Head (III 5.6 10p). We soloed up the low 5. Class gully and up-and-over Tiger tower to reach the base of the ridge. We simul-ed the majority of the route, doing 3 true pitches for the short stretches of 5.6 terrain. This route was more of a ridge traverse than a straight-up climb, but it was spectacular nonetheless.

Ski Run. Climb. Repeat. Monday, July 27, 2015. Speedgoat 50k race report. With 11,800 vert of climbing, Speedgoat is undoubtedly one of the toughest 50k races in the country (multiple races make this claim). Therefore a number of people thought I was crazy/stupid/etc. to do it as my first 50k. Regardless, I did, with it serving as a terminus of sorts of my 9 weeks in Utah this summer. As my first 50k (and 2. Running race ever), I went in with moderate expectations:. Finish sub 8 hours. Stretch of rough, ...

Ski Run. Climb. Repeat. Monday, August 31, 2015. High 5 Traverse Recon. Last weekend (8/15), Bria and I made plans to backpack into canyon lake and climb the N ridge of canyon peak but a lightning caused fire broke out near canyon lake the following day so our plans changed to the N face of el capitan up little rock creek (supposedly III 5.7 8p). We had a relaxing (and hazy) evening before heading to bed, having decided to evaluate her knee in the morning and act accordingly. While it was a bummer to hav...

http://www.andrewmayer.blogspot.com/2015/08/wind-river-climbing-part-ii.html

Ski Run. Climb. Repeat. Saturday, August 8, 2015. Wind River Climbing Part II. We spent the afternoon of our rest day relaxing at our new camp below haystack mountain, watching a party “epic” on minor dihedral (way off route), which we planned to climbed the next day (III 5.9 10p). Luckily we got some good beta from a different party in the area about the proper route-finding and went to bed nervous yet excited. Starting up pitch 1. Stoked for the money pitch. Pitch 5 (photo: chris). Fun exposed pitch 2.

Brian Story's account of skiing and more in Western Montana. Sunday, July 27, 2014. Three Joe traverse, Bass Creek. Bass Lake and beyond from Stormy Joe. I was finally able to spend a fine summery Sunday traversing from Little to Stormy Joe in Bass creek. I have wanted to do this traverse ever since hearing about Missoulian mountaineer Forest Dean's attempt last fall. It seems like kind of a long day in concept, but in reality it is quite doable, and I had a blast. 5th lifetime summit of Big St. Joe.

Brian Story's account of skiing and more in Western Montana. Thursday, October 9, 2014. Blue Mountan 30K race report. I had a great time at the Blue Mountain 30k run. The course is almost all runnable and very fast. Since it is not too long, I was able to go out fairly hard and hang onto an even pace to the end, more like a ski race than an ultramarathon.
