Academia in a new Millenium: Open - Connected - Online. Personal views on teaching, learning and research in an open, online and connected world. Thursday, 23 April 2009. The Great University of Canberra Twitter War. The twitter champs had a number of compelling points:. Twitter is a pull technology - the reader chooses which tweets to follow. Email is a push technology - the writer chooses who gets the email. Hashtags allowed users to search for and to follow conversations. Twitter is only used for inan...

Academia in a new Millenium: Open - Connected - Online. Personal views on teaching, learning and research in an open, online and connected world. Friday, 1 May 2009. Changes to this Blog. My blogging has been disorganised. In order to clean it up, I have moved all of my accounting related blogs to a new blog Accounting in Society. I have also deleted some of my older blogs and my political rants. This blog will now be restricted to issues about teaching, learning and research. Posted by Andrew at UC.

Teaching Journal: Attendance at Tutorials Revisited
http://brumbiesteach.blogspot.com/2009/11/attendance-in-tutorials-revisited.html
A journal of my thoughts, reflections and experiences about teaching. Wednesday, November 25, 2009. Attendance at Tutorials Revisited. An earlier post covered my concerns about students failure to attend tutorials. I now have the full data available to look at this more closely. The basic evidence remains pretty much the same, more than half the students attended less than 75% of tutorials. What this post adds is the data about the association between tutorial attendance and overall marks. For the studen...

Teaching Journal: November 2007
http://brumbiesteach.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html
A journal of my thoughts, reflections and experiences about teaching. Thursday, November 15, 2007. Exams 2007-2: Essay Questions. The exams have not worked as well as I would have liked. The change I made this semester to release the essay questions prior to the exam and to ban cheat sheets did not fix the problem. This year, again, students wrote everything they knew about the topic without answering the question. The problem appears to be that students do not know how to answer questions. The essays in...

Teaching Journal: July 2009
http://brumbiesteach.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
A journal of my thoughts, reflections and experiences about teaching. Friday, July 24, 2009. The engagement levels in my classes last semester were unusual. In Professional Accounting it was very high, in Contemporary Issues in Accounting PG it was reasonably high, and in Contemporary Issues in Accounting it was extremely low. Some of my colleagues argue that providing material online is destroying engagement and that we should only provide materials in class to force engagement. IMHO, this is misgui...

Teaching Journal: Moving to Wordpress
http://brumbiesteach.blogspot.com/2011/06/moving-to-wordpress.html
A journal of my thoughts, reflections and experiences about teaching. Friday, June 3, 2011. I have not posted to this blog for a while. Most of that has been due to a series of illnesses. First, early in 2010, a student coughed over me and I caught a severe bout of whooping cough from that. Just as I recovered from that, someone at a conference coughed over me again; this time it was pneumonia. Posted by Andrew at UC. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
