Area: North York Moors. Date of walk: 11th January 2015. Walkers: Andrew Gilly and Fiona. Distance: 4.9 miles. Weather: Mostly overcast, very windy, and some light drizzle. On the way to Harwood Dale we stopped at Birdwatchers Car Park in Forge Valley and topped up the feeders there. Within seconds dozens of woodland birds descended and we watched them for a while from very close quarters, using the car as a hide. PHOTO OF THE DAY. This is one of our favourite local walks and a good choice for my first walk of 2015 - there’s a lot of varied scenery packed into a short distance, and all of it is beautiful. Although the city design is a little confusing at first when walking due to its ring Iike design, it was relatively straightforward to get anywhere you needed to go on the Metro. And the people were friendly and willing to help in any way possible, even when the only language we had in common was hand gestures. I even traveled onward with one of them, Grant (an Aussie), to Saint Petersburg. But Saint Petersburg is a tale for another time. October 17, 2012.
