The Penniless Lawyer

Having nothing, yet possessing everything. Monday, 13 January 2014. A Visit to The Broody Babes. We found plenty to inspire and challenge us when we visited an all female community house in Leeds on Saturday. Although the six university students perhaps saw us as 'community experts' because we've lived in community with the Jesus army for many years, I've no doubt that we learnt more from them than they did from us. A simple love for God. What impressed me the most was their simple love for God and their...

The Penniless Lawyer: Choosing My Religion

http://andy-crisp.blogspot.com/2011/07/choosing-my-religion.html

Having nothing, yet possessing everything. Sunday, 3 July 2011. Is Christianity just one of many religions on offer - a bit like choosing shampoo at the supermarket? They all do the same job - it's just that different people have different preferences. In my hometown of Foleshill, there are plenty to choose from (religions that is - not shampoos). We've got Muslims, Hindus, Krishnas, Sikhs . . . and our (comparatively) small Christian community house right in the middle of it all. They can't all be valid!

The Penniless Lawyer: 1426 Ways to Grow Your Church

http://andy-crisp.blogspot.com/2011/06/1426-ways-to-grow-your-household.html

Having nothing, yet possessing everything. Sunday, 26 June 2011. 1426 Ways to Grow Your Church. Well, one way actually. But it's found in 1 Corinthians 14:26 (look it up). Too many Christians come to church as consumers and not as contributors. The New Testament suggests that church is more like a 'bring and share' meal, rather than a trip to a restaurant. I wrote the hymn below to the tune of ' We plough the fields and scatter. An old school assembly classic)! So bring them out! Do you not feel anointed?

The vow of celibacy | Single for Jesus

http://single4jesus.blogspot.com/2011/12/vow-of-celibacy_27.html

Snippets on the undivided. Or - getting the best out of the great and the small. Tuesday, 27 December 2011. The vow of celibacy. Twelve years ago, someone very dear made a vow to God. Swept up, was he, by a rare discovery. Glimpsed, had he, an unrivalled beauty. Gave, did he, his life that day. The discovery was that of the kingdom of heaven being lived out tangibly on earth. The vow was that of lifelong celibacy. The person was me. Go on then, you know the words.". Okay Before God and in the name of the...

Single for Jesus: September 2012

http://single4jesus.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Snippets on the undivided. Or - getting the best out of the great and the small. Wednesday, 5 September 2012. Something I wrote a few years ago, inspired by life in Christian community, but relevant to anyone living with other people. I’d like to introduce you to a friend of mine. He’s a great person – well, that’s if you can call him a person at all; I’ve never actually met him myself but I know of him. If I make a drink, he comes along after me and makes a drink. I’ve found myself thinking of the...

Celibacy | Single for Jesus

http://single4jesus.blogspot.com/2012/07/celibacy.html

Snippets on the undivided. Or - getting the best out of the great and the small. Saturday, 14 July 2012. Here are a few thoughts about celibacy. I don't always write about celibacy specifically, as I think celibacy itself is a means to an end, or various different ends, and it's generally healthier to focus on the ends rather than the means. But it doesn't hurt to home in on it from time to time. So here goes. Various thoughts about celibacy in no particular order. Celibacy is a gift from God. Celibacy w...

Drum solo without bass pedal | Single for Jesus

http://single4jesus.blogspot.com/2012/06/drum-solo-without-bass-pedal.html

Snippets on the undivided. Or - getting the best out of the great and the small. Monday, 25 June 2012. Drum solo without bass pedal. Nothing like revealing your past online. By video. It's a little-known fact that I was a drummer in various bands throughout my teens. Here's a snippet of one of them. The band was called 31 Flavours. And this video is a snippet from a pub gig somewhere in Essex. The year is 1993 - nineteen years ago and I've got the haircut to prove it. 25 June 2012 at 13:36. Enter your em...

Celibacy: a gift given or a choice made? | Single for Jesus

http://single4jesus.blogspot.com/2011/07/celibacy-gift-given-or-choice-made.html

Snippets on the undivided. Or - getting the best out of the great and the small. Friday, 8 July 2011. Celibacy: a gift given or a choice made? Celibacy is both a gift and a choice. The gift of celibacy is given by God, but the choice is made by the individual. This is a bit of a paradox in some ways: it seems strange to speak of choosing something of your own free will if God has also chosen to give it. Who's in control, God or the person? Check out what Jesus said about being celibate:. I looked at the ...

Snippets on the undivided. Or - getting the best out of the great and the small. Tuesday, 17 July 2012. Coventry Jesus Centre - Talking of telephones. I recently saw last year's annual review for Coventry Jesus Centre. And I was so impressed by all that the Centre has achieved that I had to blog about it. I've been a volunteer at the Centre since its inception in 2002, so I get to see a bit of the day-to-day action. It's been a pretty astounding ten years. This video was shown to the children at a recent.

Snippets on the undivided. Or - getting the best out of the great and the small. Monday, 28 May 2012. Jesus - The Miracle Man. As a response to this previous blog post. About the need for more miracles, I thought I'd post this video/slideshow I recently made. Kind of says it all. Links to this post. We need signs and wonders . A man stood up at our recent national church leaders event and said something that has stuck with me ever since. He said he'd found something. But what about verse 43? Is this part...

A POET'S PRAYER | Single for Jesus

http://single4jesus.blogspot.com/2012/07/poets-prayer.html

Snippets on the undivided. Or - getting the best out of the great and the small. Tuesday, 3 July 2012. A second poem from Wilf, sent to me recently. Surely this applies not only to the poet or the writing of poetry, but much more widely to anyone, whatever their calling or gifts in life. Who were the Word. Before a word was spoken. Make me what I write. May the hand that grips the pen. Be gripped first by You. Before this pen touches paper. Oh Lord God touch this man. So that everything I write is.

Celibacy: God makes his vow | Single for Jesus

http://single4jesus.blogspot.com/2012/03/celibacy-god-makes-his-vow.html

Snippets on the undivided. Or - getting the best out of the great and the small. Friday, 2 March 2012. Celibacy: God makes his vow. God recently made a vow of celibacy. If I were to rewrite the celibate vow, but from your perspective, would you make the vow? Replied God without hesitation. Avowed celibates make their vow to God and do their best to keep to all aspects of it, but surely God has a part to play in that commitment. So here it is:. Once I'd rewritten it, I took it up to bed with me that eveni...

Creative Writing

Thursday, May 1, 2008. Part 1: Why in childhood? Part 2: Why later in life? Older people from high school and beyond read for facts, opinions, to write a paper and to just enjoy reading a book that’s fiction or non-fiction. The experience they can get will help them know more things or to pass a class. Older people read to learn more things or just to have something to read that’s very interesting in any way. Part 3: Why in our nation? Part 4: Your stories. Part 5: Characteristics of a well-told story.

Writer, editor, musician, public speaker. Redeeming the Gift of Power. Perhaps no question with such urgent life-and-death consequences is more poorly understood among Christians in our era than the stewardship of power; but gloriously, in Playing God, Andy Crouch provides the clarity we need in this once-in-a-generation work of sweeping theological and sociological depth. It is fresh, rigorous, profoundly helpful and a delight to read. Mdash; Gabe Lyons, coauthor of. Mdash;Soong-Chan Rah, author of.
