an english major in france: June 2011

http://www.anenglishmajorinfrance.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 15, 2011. Au Revoir, La France. The language is still an unnavigable cauchemar. Of seventeen tenses and their conjugations (of which I can confidently use about five). And I've retained two things from 6th grade French class: "Oh la vache! Very useful) and how to sing "I have a Little Dreidel" (Not useful at all.). One thing I've learned about the French language this year is that there simply aren't as many words as there are in English. To someone learning French, it should. Leaning Fre...

an english major in france: December 2010

http://www.anenglishmajorinfrance.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 29, 2010. A new post is in the works about my winter break adventures, but for now, check this out! I've been featured on Pink Pangea, an online community for women travelers. Exciting! Monday, December 20, 2010. And ends each transaction with, "Merciaurevoirbonnefinjournéeàvous! But I'm only given an icy glare at best? Granted, it went something like:. It's cold out. I used to have a hat, but now I don't.". Oh wow, that sucks. You should get another one.". This was a good move. S...

Thursday, October 21, 2010. Reasons Why My Life Is Pretty Great Right Now. Even the copier broke down this morning and one of the teachers joked, "Ah, it's started its vacation early! Then she asked me how to say Hors Service. In English and when I walked past the copier later I saw her handwritten sign that read: OUT OFF ORDER. I didn't bother to correct it. I'm on vacation from teaching English. 5) I have eight different types of cheese in my fridge. See #4: France is a great country. 7) Revisiting my ...

an english major in france: January 2011

http://www.anenglishmajorinfrance.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 27, 2011. A Blip of Spring. The first few weeks of January were gorgeous. 55 degree weather, sun shining every day. Knowing it wouldn't last (but secretly hoping it would), I took my camera out on one of my walks to try and capture how beautiful everything looked. The dreaded stairs I have to take when I miss the bus and have to walk to school. They're alright when you're not running up them though. These bizarre, knobbly trees are everywhere! Anyone know what kind of tree this is?

December | 2010 | basket full of rain

https://sucredepomme.wordpress.com/2010/12

Basket full of rain. I live in a city nobody can pronounce. To: you, From: my students. Here is a poem my students wrote via madlib. This is a mashup of the best answers, but they were all gems. Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the palace. Not a creature was stirring, not even a tiger. The pants were hung by the bathroom with care,. In hopes that George Clooney soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds,. While visions of cats danced in their heads. And then, i...

Basket full of rain. I live in a city nobody can pronounce. So last weekend after our epic hike, Laura, Megan and I thought to ourselves, “How can we possibly improve upon the excellence of this weekend next weekend? 8221; It was a hard question, dear reader. How can you really get much better than a long walk in the sunshine, delicious sandwiches, and milkshakes at Couleur Café? BACON FEST 2011. That’s how. And an incredible cheesecake with a. Speculoos crust, and Deepa brought the drinks. But the walk ...

Basket full of rain. I live in a city nobody can pronounce. Vas in the world ist das? It’s officially Christmas here in Rouen; the streets are decked out in white and blue lights, there’s a marché de Noël in the centre ville and a ferris wheel in front of the Cathedral (which looks terrible during the day, but turns instantly charming when the twinkly lights come on), and today I even went to a Christmas concert in the église Jeanne d’Arc. Other things wrong with this performance included the absurdly lo...

Basket full of rain. I live in a city nobody can pronounce. Tiny Ponies Make Everything Better. It’s been an action-packed three days, let me tell you. 8221; I very happily told him I was going to Paris and skipped off to the acceuil. This might have been a bad thing to do as far as greve-karma goes–you’ll see how it comes back to haunt me later. Or better yet, a gigantic green leaf to hang over my bed as a canopy? The woman informed us that if we walked to Oissel, the next town over, we could probably g...

Basket full of rain. I live in a city nobody can pronounce. Republika Hrvatska →. C’est anglais, mais c’est bon! I am sore, exhausted, and I have a sinus headache that’s making me feel like I’m being stabbed in the optic nerve every time I blow my nose or tilt my head slightly off center (which, I’ve come to realize, is a key gesture in my French body language lexicon–I wonder if my colleagues think I have a tic? All that aside, though, I’ve had an excellent weekend. Read at Shakespeare and Co. You are c...

I know I’m over a month late on this one, but do you want to hear about Croatia or do you want to hear about Croatia? I thought so. Ready, set,. We were extremely excited to say the least, and I’m happy to report that Croatia and surrounding environs were just as, if not more, wonderful than we expected. Basket full of rain. I live in a city nobody can pronounce. To: you, From: my students. Bacon Fest 2011 →. Walking tour of rouen (treasure map optional). Dear reader, I’m sorry I’ve been absent from the interwebs for so long! Basket full of rain. I live in a city nobody can pronounce. Vas in the world ist das? To: you, From: my students →. Snow makes my students hilarious. This week I’ve been having my BTS kids create their own companies; it lets them use the super boring technical vocabulary they’ve learned in a fun context. And they’ve certainly been having fun with it. One business, where you could get a chocolate massage and buy some edible chocolate massage products, made their headquarters in a building made of chocolat...

An Englishman In…? | A gentleman walks, he never runs.

An Englishman In…? A gentleman walks, he never runs. Up and Down in the Dolomites. February 26, 2014. It was a pleasant drive north into the mountains, our cars in convoy all the way. As a fan of winter sports, I had to admit it was a somewhat bizarre to see these places without a thick white covering of snow; piste-bashers sitting idle, gleaming in the sunshine. We set up camp then went to find food, explore the town, and plan the next day’s activities. On the iron road. Multipitch and stomach aches.
