Late in my teens I caught the walleye bug that I still have today. Bellevue and Muscatine, Iowa were considered home waters, but trips to almost every pool from Burlington to St. Paul were also made. In that time frame, trips to other large rivers such as the Illinois and Tennessee also became annual events. Since our family's move to Minnesota in 2002, Pool 4 of the Mississippi River has been my home water. Most of my guiding is done on Pool 4 but also guide on Pools 2 and 3 on request.

Temps are still on the high side but pretty normal for mid summer. Wednesday was another decent day before the rains came. Underwater Camera Walleye Footage. Below are a couple of videos shot in the winter on the upper reaches of pool 4 that confirm our beliefs that walleyes do typically hold in somewhat shallower water than saugers. As you will see, the first video shot in 12-18 fow, has quite a few more walleyes than the second one which was taken quite a bit deeper and has mostly saugers.

About The Mississippi River - Pools 2 Through 4. Encompasses Lake Pepin, which is roughly 23 miles long, twelve miles of river above the lake to Lock and Dam 3, and twelve miles of river and backwaters below the lake to Lock and Dam 4. Is a relatively short pool (about 18 miles long) but has many wingdams, cuts, and sloughs. Is famous as a trophy fishery. This is largely due to its catch and release restrictions.
