Its very satisfying to load some black-and-white film into my Hasselblad and do some slow, considered portraits. But I have also come to relish the challenge of the speedy portrait: a designer at a product launch, a choreographer at her performance, a politician at a rally. My favourite portraits are spare, graphic and calm but there's nothing like a cheeky smirk or a spontaneous giggle to bring a subject to life. Michel Roux Jr, chef. Elizabeth Streb, chroeographer. My approach to food photography is to concentrate on real food shot on location in available light. Where the food is fresh and tasty in a street market or artfully arranged in a fine restaurant, there is no need for technical tricks or complicated lighting set-ups. My style was best utilised in the book Real Italian Food, published by ConranOctopus. Lovos Island, Finland.

After working in book publishing for 10 years, I jumped the fence and became a freelance photographer. Initially I worked mainly for the holiday companies Sovereign and First Choice on their city break and villa holiday brochures. I also had the wonderful experience of shooting all the location photography for the book Real Italian Food. Sunday Times Travel Magazine. My archive of travel work is represented by Corbis. And Axiom photographic libraries. And poetry performance group Live Canon.
