life's a bear: Making Batman
http://lifesabear.blogspot.com/2012/10/making-batman.html
It's that time of year! The one time every year that I use up a year's worth of my crafty brain cells on one holiday: Halloween. I feel strongly about making homemade costumes or re-using costumes. I refuse to buy store-bought costumes - mostly out of principle. Prior to last year, I always used hand-me-down costumes. Benny has been a bee, Dumbo. Last year, Lila was a frog. All four costumes came from generous friends. Last year, Benny decided he wanted to be an astronaut. Be using a glue stick this year!

life's a bear: The 12 Benefits of Biking: Marketing
http://lifesabear.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-12-benefits-of-biking-marketing.html
The 12 Benefits of Biking: Marketing. I couldn't really come up with a good name for this benefit because it was such an unexpected benefit. Business promotion didn't seem right. Marketing is just about the best I could do. So, when it comes to marketing Struckman Consulting. Now I just rely on the conversational benefits of riding my bike. At some point, I'll update my business website to include information about biking and its relationship to the way I work and how I see the world. Find Me Here Too.

life's a bear: The 12 Benefits of Biking: Biking Mom Means Biking Kids
http://lifesabear.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-12-benefits-of-biking-biking-mom.html
The 12 Benefits of Biking: Biking Mom Means Biking Kids. I'm going to combine benefits #6 and #7 because they are so closely related. I may be forever known as the Biking Mom now. The kids and I bike just about anywhere we go (within reason, of course), particularly in the summer when we have relaxed schedules and nice weather. As a result, Benny has made some pretty significant round-trip treks. I think his longest ride to date was nearly 8 miles this summer - to go swimming no less. Find Me Here Too.

life's a bear: The Final Benefit of Biking: Motivation
http://lifesabear.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-final-benefit-of-biking-motivation.html
The Final Benefit of Biking: Motivation. There are far more than 12 benefits of biking. And many of them are so closely related that it's hard to separate them (health and environment, economics and community, biking mom means biking family). The 12 that I posted are specific to me, but I have a feeling that many people experience these benefits as well. I'm not sure. Maybe just to myself.) It was just the kind of motivation I needed to take this type of a challenge on. The message here is, if I can do i...

life's a bear: The 12 Benefits of Biking: Community
http://lifesabear.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-12-benefits-of-biking-community.html
The 12 Benefits of Biking: Community. There is a wonderful - or perhaps many wonderful - biking community(ies) in Denver. Road bikers, mountain bikers, commuters, cruisers. You name it, Denver has it. BikeDenver is a great local organization that encourages the bike communities that exist here. It also advocates for better bike infrastructure, educates people about safe riding and sharing the road. Thank you to everyone who has joined me in this adventure! Labels: 12 Benefits of Biking. life's a bear: Keep Your Eyes on the Children
http://lifesabear.blogspot.com/2012/08/keep-your-eyes-on-children.html
Keep Your Eyes on the Children. My little water babies, at Nana's and Papa's house. Benny kept telling me that I needed to "keep your eyes on the children." I had no idea what he was talking about, other than wanting me to be outside with him. Turns out that the little warning picture on the side of the pool had an adult with his EYES on the children. A little creepy, but Benny interpreted it just right. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Find Me Here Too. Are We There Yet? Let's Go Ride a Bike.

life's a bear: Urban Homesteading LITE: Pickles
http://lifesabear.blogspot.com/2013/09/urban-homesteading-lite-pickles.html
Urban Homesteading LITE: Pickles. I've been meaning to make pickles for the past few years. I assumed it would be hard - canning and all. I heard about refrigerator pickles, but never really looked into them. Until this year when The Real Dill. Posted a tutorial on quick pickling. Did you know that you can pickle in about five minutes? Large or small jars (I used old applesauce and tomato sauce jars). Cucumbers, onions, garlic, carrots, etc., etc., etc. 1 1/2 cup water. 1 1/2 cup vinegar. So easy. An...

life's a bear: The 12 Benefits of Biking: Apparel
http://lifesabear.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-12-benefits-of-biking-apparel.html
The 12 Benefits of Biking: Apparel. Over the past year, my wardrobe has shifted. Not necessarily on purpose or quickly. It's been a slow transition. Certain clothes and shoes work better on the bike and since I don't have a chain guard, I have to be mindful about what I wear. The tenth benefit of riding a bike is the challenge of finding apparel that will work with the bike (and be somewhat stylish at the same time). Seen here, ski parka, Po Campo bag and Frye Veronica boots. (There are some skinny j...

life's a bear: recipes
http://lifesabear.blogspot.com/p/recipes.html
Out of necessity, I only cook/bake things that are simple to make (two kids, a job, hobbies and friends all cut into cooking time, which is OK by me). The less ingredients and steps, the better. I also prefer that the dishes are healthy and I strive to cook and bake from scratch as much as possible, using fresh ingredients. Related, but not entirely relevant to all cooking, is our garden and my attempts to use everything that we grow. I keep track of our gardening adventures here:. Find Me Here Too.
