Dispatches from the Bottom of the World

Dispatches from the Bottom of the World. A Year at McMurdo Station. Saturday, May 3, 2014. On a magic carpet ride. Twilight colors at Arrival Heights, with Erebus in the background. Starting off with something pretty. The sun set last week, leaving us in twilight, and it has definitely gotten darker through out the week, as night continues to fall. But before we get to 24-hour darkness, we've been getting some lovely colors, at least when the weather cooperates. Getting out of the PB at Windless Bight.

Dispatches from the Bottom of the World: March 2014

http://antarcticdispatches.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Dispatches from the Bottom of the World. A Year at McMurdo Station. Friday, March 28, 2014. It's time for another post about some of the science I look after down here at McMurdo. CosRay. Is probably one of the coolest projects I work with. It doesn't actually require much in the way of support from me, but between the actual science that it does, the building that it is in, and the history. Behind it, it is very cool. A cosmic ray interacts with Earth's atmosphere on the wall of the CosRay building.

Dispatches from the Bottom of the World. A Year at McMurdo Station. Sunday, April 29, 2012. Sorry about not posting last week. Things got away from me a bit. Anyways, it is now full dark, and we’ve been getting auroras pretty regularly. Aurora over the station. The bright spot is Guy driving the groomer. Aurora over the cryo building. Photo taken by Carlos Pobes, with. A nicer camera than mine. Buzz hanging out in Cryo. Also, the South Pole Pool League is starting up soon. The league ends in a tourna...

Dispatches from the Bottom of the World: October 2012

http://antarcticdispatches.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Dispatches from the Bottom of the World. A Year at McMurdo Station. Sunday, October 21, 2012. First flight coming in for refueling. We had our first flight come in on Friday. It was a Basler on its way from Canada, via Rothera (British station on the Antarctic peninsula below Chile), to McMurdo for the summer. They were only here for about an hour, just stopping to refuel. But they brought treats for the Polies:. Precious cargo. Delicious, precious cargo. See, spotless and shiny. Sunday, October 14, 2012.

Dispatches from the Bottom of the World: November 2012

Dispatches from the Bottom of the World. A Year at McMurdo Station. Monday, November 5, 2012. Ready to go onboad flight P004R, a Herc LC-130. We got to McMurdo in time for dinner, which include real, rathere than powdered, milk for the first time in nine months. It was so good. McMurdo is a lot bigger than Pole (there are almost 1,000 people here right now), so things were busy and the cafeteria was a little bit overwhelming. The mountains across the bay from McMurdo. Dispatches from the Bottom of the World. A Year at McMurdo Station. Sunday, May 27, 2012. The Milky Way from DA. The cooks just switched shifts last week, so we’ve gotten some different styles of cooking for breakfast and dinner. We also got this:. The cake is a reference to this video: Honey Badger. One of the scientists on station has been doing Monday night astronomy classes, and this last week he took us outside to take a look at the sky. Showing off his fancy green laser. Sunday, May 20, 2012. Askar...
