Travels and discoveries from my Antarctic visits. Friday, December 31, 2010. Visitors from Chilean Navy -Lautaro in November. On November 18th, the Chilean Navy Lautaro ship came to visit. This particular ship services the chilean stations on the Antarctic Peninsula and is also part of the rescue team if needed in the peninsula area. They are on constant patrol. January and February is our summer that usually brings sunny skies which is what brings most of our cruise ships to Palmer during this time, yet this summer was not a summer of sun. A few cruise ships slipped in within a sunny day window between cloudiness. This is the National Geographic Explorer taken from station outside my office. Clelia II cruise ship. We've gotten in new science groups, seen science groups leave and our station population went from 24 people to 44 within a day. It's amazing how much energy of the community changes with each influx of people. As you read this current entry, I'll do this cronologically so the most recent info is at the top of this entry. This is our Boating Coordinator - Lily Glass, she's an adventurer from past lives and we are blessed with her presence her. She's funny, sometime serious, but mostly fun to be with. The picture below she's showing Bill the finer points in holding his throttle. PQ is driving this boat. You can tell that the area is a bit foggy and possibly some moisture on my camera lens.

Travels and discoveries from my Antarctic visits. Saturday, January 01, 2011. I love the backyard walks along the northern shore of our little peninsula at Palmer Station. The rocky terrain reminds me of the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota, the bedrock exposed and scoured by glaciation from long years past.
