Follow Your Bliss: Cupcake
http://followingyourbliss.blogspot.com/2008/03/cupcake.html
Saturday, March 22, 2008. The other day during bus dismissal I was reminded that children represent the best of what mankind can attain. . I was chatting with a former first grade student that I affectionately call 'cupcake' - this is the artist, who after I remarked on the beauty of one her drawings last year replied "I don't go to art school for nothing". She is truly outstanding in so many ways. . 160;Your hair is really long now. Gary: Why are you going to do that? Cupcake: So they won't die. I thi...

Follow Your Bliss: January 2015

Saturday, January 3, 2015. Why did you become a teacher? I get asked this quite a bit in tones ranging from sincere inquiry to rhetorical distaste. And now that I have my Ph.D the question and flavor have morphed into "What are you going to do now that you have a doctorate? The expectation is that I should move up. As if teaching is a stepping stone toward something greater or more important. I've never viewed it that way. Connection leads to my second reason. They also gave me a copy of Curious George.

Sunday, March 22, 2015. Oni and I are diligent about establishing and maintaining a positive classroom culture. We want our students to safely explore those risk-taking. Challenges that push them towards an A-Ha! Our beliefs are couched within the premise that in order to own the learning our students must enjoy the ride. We always frame the assessments within the parameters of the fact that it helps us. Teach them better. Tests and assessments let us. Know how we are doing. Links to this post. The lates...

Follow Your Bliss: Who Would Win?
http://followingyourbliss.blogspot.com/2011/12/who-would-win.html
Saturday, December 17, 2011. In the spirit of the Who Would Win? Books that have my first graders entranced as of late, I decided to apply this question to a mythological battle between the unfortunate snake-coiffed Medusa and the one-eyed man-child Polyphemus (a.k.a. Odysseus' impetuous Cyclops). The children wrote their responses to include a brief supporting statement as to why one or the other would prove victorious. As I put this question to them I thought, "First grade rocks! This is great because ...

St Osmund’s Primary School. My Life in Books: Judith Kerr comes to the Barnes Children’s Literature Festival. It was a full house at The Olympic Cinema as legendary author and illustrator Judith Kerr took to her seat on the stage to reminisce about her remarkable life and books. Missed it? Arno Bryant brings you her memories of fleeing Nazi Germany, her love of Google and her stand for feline feminism. The Tiger Who Came To Tea. When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit. Follow Your Bliss: The Rose
http://followingyourbliss.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-rose.html
Wednesday, July 22, 2015. The One Hundred and Fourth Annual Commencement. Ceremony for our graduating Eighth Grade students included a recently added tradition called Presentation of Roses. Stands on the stage and presents a rose to an adult they deem deserving of thanks and recognition for the love, support, and guidance they've provided. The decision does not come without a lot of contemplative handwringing. Last year, I was honored by my tearful little cupcake. First, there is a little backstory.
