Dogs, donkeys, and llamas are the typical livestock guardian animals, but which one would be best for our situation? Oscar as a baby. Oscar guarding the goats. A week after the llamas arrived, my son called me out to the sheep pasture. Teddy, our herd sire, had been attacked. A coyote had ripped a four-inch by six-inch piece of skin off his rear leg, but he was otherwise unharmed. He was the first sheep to ever survive an attack! Obviously, the llamas had stopped the attack and chased off the coyotes!

Wormwood in the background and mojito mint in the front. When walking in the woods only a month after moving here, I smelled mint. Yes, spearmint grows wild in our woods. Wanting to make my life a little simpler though, I dug up a piece of the spearmint and planted it in a flower bed. Now I can easily have a glass of spearmint iced tea in the middle of summer whenever I’m in the mood. We also have a nice patch of lemon balm, which combines nicely with the spearmint to make a refreshing iced tea.

We have raised most of the different varieties of heritage turkeys since 2002, including royal palms, bourbon reds, slate, lavenders, Narragansetts, and Spanish blacks. For the past few years, we raised Royal Palms because they are easy to process on farm ourselves due to their smaller size, although we do still use a USDA certified processing plant for turkeys that we sell.
