Steve regularly holds 2 and 3 day clinics throughout New Zealand which are popular with both riders and spectators alike. The first day of the clinic consists of gaining discipline and a mutual respect with your horse. This is done by teaching horses and riders basic groundwork manouevers that create the foundation to encourage your horse to move more freely, confidently and softly under saddle on the second and third days of the clinic. Problems often arise from the horse handler inadvertently giving the horse confusing signals by offering release or reward when the horse has attempted a different try from the one you were looking for. These problems can be worked through by consistently instilling the wanted behaviour in the horse by ensuring reward is given with correct timing and at each positive try the horse makes towards the favoured outcome. Steve's method of starting horses involves establishing a solid foundation of ground work and halter training which then leads through into work under saddle. Incorporating the round pen to encourage freedom of movement lets the horse find the easier option. By reinforcing the correct attitude and movement, the horse is encouraged to find a comfortable way to learn. The young horse then becomes more receptive to further advanced training under saddle. As a child he had ponies which were ridden on the station.
