Vern's Verbal Vibe: Almost Finished, Sort Of
https://3vee.blogspot.com/2015/04/almost-finished-sort-of.html
Thoughts from Toronto musician and writer Vern Nicholson. April 26, 2015. Almost Finished, Sort Of. Having just replaced 71 (! Keyboard parts, I'm nearing the end of my recording. By my count, I have between 12 and 15 tracks left to record and once they're done, I'll be finished. Right? Well, kind of. Really, one finishes a full-length recording three times: once when the last note is laid down, once more when the album is mixed, and the true finish line mastering, cover design and CD duplication. Come o...

Vern's Verbal Vibe: Cleanup Time
https://3vee.blogspot.com/2014/09/cleanup-time.html
Thoughts from Toronto musician and writer Vern Nicholson. September 29, 2014. My album is now about three-quarters complete, and before I move on to the last trio of songs I'm cleaning up some earlier recordings. In some cases this simply involves remixing; in others, I'm revisiting songs I recorded as far as two years back and redoing parts that didn't pass muster. I've also added a few embellishments to one song that needed a bit more fleshing out. Posted by vern @ 12:43 am. View my complete profile.

Vern's Verbal Vibe: The Thrill of a First Mix
https://3vee.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-thrill-of-first-mix.html
Thoughts from Toronto musician and writer Vern Nicholson. May 14, 2015. The Thrill of a First Mix. That is, until tonight and that sumptuous first mix. Now I hear a song. Sure, I can still "zoom in" and focus on how the individual parts sound, which I'll need to do to create a better mix on the second pass. (Aside: how many mixes till you hit on "the one"? How do the vocals blend, with each other and with the instrumentation? Is the rhythm section in balance? Posted by vern @ 1:33 am. Down, But Not Out.

Vern's Verbal Vibe: Double Your Pleasure
https://3vee.blogspot.com/2014/10/double-your-pleasure.html
Thoughts from Toronto musician and writer Vern Nicholson. October 14, 2014. Not that I know the first thing about painting, but I imagine recording is its sonic equivalent: one can create texture by layering. In music, layering is accomplished by, for example, blending voices or instruments which play complementary lines to the main theme, or by doubling existing parts, thereby emphasizing or reinforcing them. It's the latter I'll touch on in today's post. Posted by vern @ 12:55 am. Singer/songwriter/mul...

Vern's Verbal Vibe: June 2006
https://3vee.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html
Thoughts from Toronto musician and writer Vern Nicholson. June 01, 2006. Last month, I finally adopted him and took him for a check-up. Muswell is two and a half (says the vet) and in good health. He's now off the street and in a good home; as for me, I get a loyal companion out of the deal. And yes, he really is as angelic as he looks! Posted by vern @ 1:36 am. Vern's Verbal Vibe: Have They Lived Here? Like, in February?
https://3vee.blogspot.com/2015/02/have-they-lived-here-like-in-february.html
Thoughts from Toronto musician and writer Vern Nicholson. February 01, 2015. Have They Lived Here? Like, in February? So, The Economist. Recently proclaimed my humble little burg the best city in the world to live in. Paradise and I just don't get it. Though I'm quite sure there are far worse places to call home even in affluent North America, I fail to see what makes stuffy, complacent, frigid-or-sweltering Toronto much more than a junior-league New York. Vern's Verbal Vibe: May 2006
https://3vee.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html
Thoughts from Toronto musician and writer Vern Nicholson. May 25, 2006. The Zen of Baseball. I listen to baseball on the radio to help me wind down. I love the quirky strategy, the sleepy pace, the legend and lore, and the fact that baseball is one of the few (only? Team sports that doesn't run on a clock. Nine innings take as long as they take. Is sorely missed.). Catching an intercounty game. We now present (at no additional cost to you). 755 - Most career home runs, Hank Aaron (1954-1976). 406 - Ted W...
