The lighthouse is situated on a sandstone ledge 278 feet above sea level. It was switched to automation in 1947 the same year the harbour was closed to ships. Ashby Homestead built in 1900. Camping and BBQ areas. Hours 8am to 9pm (7pm winter).

The site provides excellent views and is also the site of the signal station platform that has been there since 1865. The old site was a few kilometers away and had been in storage since 1986, In its old site it failed to prevent the worst maritime disaster in NZ history - the wreck of HMS Orpheus in 1863, with a loss of 189 men.
