Postcards from Outer Space. Musings of an expatriate Californian on East Coast life, politics, religion, and the world…not necessarily in that order! Tuesday, July 23, 2013. Why babies are cute. A nurse who cared for my baby sister used to say, “G-d made babies cute so we would be willing to take care of them.” And my mom would respond, “Then G-d made Palomita extra cute, so we’d be willing to take extra care of her.”. Luckily it seems that twins come with that dose of extra cuteness too. It gets better ...

Postcards from Outer Space. Musings of an expatriate Californian on East Coast life, politics, religion, and the world…not necessarily in that order! Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Holy Primaries, Batman! I know, I know. I should be over the vagaries of the MA electoral system by now. I mean, what do I have to be nostalgic about anyways? The Sec. of State and LA County Registrar of Voters were always good about that. The county sends you your sample ballot (with a form to request an absentee ballot on t...Rule ...

Postcards from Outer Space. Musings of an expatriate Californian on East Coast life, politics, religion, and the world…not necessarily in that order! Thursday, July 22, 2010. Secrecy in the News. This week has been doing a series called "Top Secret America". Also, on a related note, I'm sort of surprised they didn't interview (or quote, anyhow) Steven Aftergood at FAS. For this study. If you're interested in the topic you should definitely be reading his blog, Secrecy News. Wednesday, July 14, 2010.

Baynonim: 2004/08/01 - 2004/08/08

A man in the middle. Saturday, August 07, 2004. Why I like the shteeble vs Why I like the shul. At the shteeble we finish before 11:30, and often before 11; at the shul we sing all the the old songs, and psuke d'zimra isn't rushed. At the shteeble, the rav rarely speaks and when he does his words seldom make me feel uncomfortable or introspective; at the shul the rabbi speaks every week but often with power, charisma and polish. A man in the middle. Tuesday, November 09, 2004. When last we saw Adam Ragil,. He was approaching the lecturn. At a meeting of the shteeble membership. At this point, I was interrupted for the first or second time. Among the objections from the crowd: We had face-to-face seating in the shuls we grew up in. There's nothing wrong with it. It's not disrespectful. We turned out fine, didn't we? I demanded silence. We've banished whiskey from the shul. Saw his opening "Let's ask the rabbi," he called in his b...
