When I walked him in the city streets, we had our normal rounds to visit all his favorite people: the doorman at Lafayette St, the machine shop operator, the waitress in the neighborhood diner, the Malaysians making pancakes in the window….he was the star and I just had to play the proud parent.

Benjamin loved a warm bath but he had to stick his hand out to feel it before he jumped in- Public Enemy #1 for him was COLD WATER. Guns, knives, and clubs didn’t threaten him much- but filling up a cup with cold tap water was a helpful deterrent in many problematic situations. He enjoyed listening to music and although he couldn’t really sing, when I whistled close to him, he would open his mouth and let the air circulate inside, and we would make music together.

Benjamin soon became enthralled with the big city and everyone marveled at this incredible little creature in that harsh concrete jungle. He was like a fairy bringing enchantment everywhere he went. When he was at home, he acted as the gargoyle in our building, perching on the outside sill 7 floors above the street, surveying everyone that passed by below. He would talk to them with primate sounds and gestures and many, trying to be monkeys themselves, communicated back with him in the same language.

Once Upon a Time…. There were two little monkeys dying in a cardboard box in a distant land. Their mother was shot and eaten by humans and they were left with nothing to hold on to. One of the siblings died and the other one was emaciated, hungry and desperate for his mother’s body and would die shortly too. No one cared.

In December 2010, after spending some time with Benjamin in the sanctuary and seeing his health seemingly improve, I went traveling in South America. One morning I was suddenly told that his condition turned grave. I rushed to the airport but it was too late, Benjamin died shortly thereafter.
