A farm journal of a mid-coast Maine goat dairy
Appleton Creamery: Local, continued
http://appletoncreamery.blogspot.com/2010/05/local-continued.html
A farm journal of a mid-coast Maine goat dairy. Wednesday, May 19, 2010. Finally, our supplier has found domestic garlic for us! Not local, not yet, but at least it’s not from China. How crazy is that, imported garlic from China? This season, we have learned how to make rennet! We are also experimenting with the most local of cheese packaging: beeswax. How cool is that? Renewable, recyclable, reusable, all natural, smells really good, and very subtlely flavors the cheese. And beautiful! In love with local.

A farm journal of a mid-coast Maine goat dairy. Thursday, March 25, 2010. I am in the food business. The healthy, local, alternative food business. And my dirty little secret is that I eat at the gas station at least a couple of times a week. Some days, in my multitasking life, the only way to get something to eat is when I stop for gas. I have to get the gas. I can skip meals. Posted by Appleton Creamery. However, we seem to be enjoying an early and warm spring, so things are starting to look up. Milk, ...

A farm journal of a mid-coast Maine goat dairy. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. I am in full-on hibernation mode. The goats have been dry for several weeks, so chores are a minimum. I’m back in the house by 4:30. What a gift winter days and evenings are! On snowy days, and unlike last winter, we’ve had at least one a week since Christmas, we watch movies. The first blizzard, we watched 9 movies in three days. We’ve toned that down a bit to a couple a week. Ll be lucky if I can fit out the door, come kidding...
Appleton Creamery: A Typical Day
http://appletoncreamery.blogspot.com/2010/05/typical-day.html
A farm journal of a mid-coast Maine goat dairy. Wednesday, May 19, 2010. Here’s what life is like right now:. Sleep is restless after about 3 am, easily wakened by snoring, or cats scratching, or wind blowing. I start trying to figure out what needs to be done this day, and all chance of sleep is gone. The apprentices can’t get here fast enough. Posted by Appleton Creamery. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Appleton, Maine, United States. View my complete profile.

Sometimes about Portland, Maine or not! Sunday, January 31, 2010. Saturday Night at the Ice Bar. Stopped by late for a quick peek at the Ice bar on Saturday night. They were really excited by the turnout for all three days, over 3000 tickets, and expect to hand over a big check to charity. I hadn't expected to take any more pictures, but I had my camera, so what the hey! Labels: Eves At The Garden. Saturday, January 30, 2010. Friday Night at The Ice Bar. Thursday, January 28, 2010. Sometimes about Portland, Maine or not! Wednesday, August 25, 2010. Havana, Fit For A 1st Meal. When I made plans to take the Canon In The Parks Video Workshop, in Bar Harbor this past weekend, I put in a call to Michael Boland, co-owner of Havana, to see if I could shoot in his kitchen, on Sunday night. He said, "Great, come on in! When I arrived about 6:15 the place was starting to fill up. The well stocked wine cellar is affixed to the side of the back dining room and has a large window between them.

The first stop was the small modern warehouse which lead back into the caves themselves and an old wine press from centuries past that had been used to make some of the first wines produced from the vineyard. Our guide explained how each section was used to store the different wines the winery produced and how the wines were looked after as they went thru the aging process. Monday, April 26, 2010. Sometimes about Portland, Maine or not! Monday, June 28, 2010. Taste of the Nation 2010. Taste of the Nation 2010 was a huge success again this year at it's new location, Portland's Ocean Gateway. The event which raises money each year to fight children's hunger was held inside a large pavilion put up by Leavitt and Parris in the nearby parking area. I've took way to many pictures to post them all here, so I will put the larger group on Flickr. Taste of the Nation 2010. Friday, June 25, 2010. Roasted Hal...

Local Sprouts couldn't keep up with demand for there pea soup on sunday in the damp and cold. It showed promise but of course it didn't time to really come together, but it was hot. The farmers market had lots of really nice looking produce including Sparrow Arc Farm which supplies some of the better restaurants in Maine and beyond with fresh products. Fingers Look Like Carrots!

Sometimes about Portland, Maine or not! Sunday, March 6, 2011. Well I survived the Incredible Breakfast Cook-Off in the sense that I'm not lying on my stomach with a heating pad on my back, but I was in no shape to pick up a camera today. Maybe I should just go out to eat, there are plenty of good deals and lots of restaurants I haven't tried yet. Here are 3 images from Restaurant Week 2010. Sometimes about Portland, Maine or not! Wednesday, March 24, 2010. Vignola Whole Hog Dinner. This is my next to the last post before I'm off to Europe, where I hope to post regularly about anything that catches my eye. I'm sure there will be food involved somehow. I have a lead on a restaurant kitchen in Paris and hoping to do more in Prague and Budapest. Sometimes about Portland, Maine or not! Sunday, October 31, 2010. Restaurant Week /Friday. Clementine/Boda.
