No Longer Approximating Normality. A DEFUNCT math teacher blog. April 13, 2015. April 19, 2015. Today’s ridiculous project – a google sheet for AP style computer output. I have since learned that StatsCrunch can output very similar data (and is nice enough that I may do subscriptions for it next year and use it more thoroughly with my students), but I did not know that tool this morning. So what did I do? Should statistics be taught longitudinally? Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

No Longer Approximating Normality. A DEFUNCT math teacher blog. April 9, 2015. April 19, 2015. I merged the study of triangle trigonometry and polygon area in my geometry class, since they go together very well. For their test, I created this multi-part area problem I like quite a bit. No Longer Approximating Normality. A DEFUNCT math teacher blog. April 19, 2015. April 19, 2015. A Google Sheets based standards gamification system. As described in a previous post, I recently decided to try a mastery-based grading system with gamification. For my geometry classes, inspired by some amazing work from Kyle Pearce. Implementation of the system is key, and they had together, with the help of Alice Keeler. Here is the highlight version:. I made three major changes to Kyle’s sheet:. I sped it ...

No Longer Approximating Normality. A DEFUNCT math teacher blog. April 19, 2015. April 19, 2015. I’m Gamifying Learning Goals with help from the MTBoS. On Thursday night I was up until about 11 pm – far past my normal weeknight bedtime – working on finishing some grading as midquarter grades were being posted the next day. As I worked my way through 40 copies of a Big Unit Test, I realized that I was being surprised by them more often than I’d like. Never really got it. I wrote this tweet:. And then, afte...

No Longer Approximating Normality. A DEFUNCT math teacher blog. May 5, 2015. What do we measure, how do we measure it, and why? She was concerned about fairness. Some students who would do well if she did straightforward “lecture- 3 examples- homework” classes on this material will likely do worse. As she phrased it “I’m grading their innate abilities since I’m never teaching it. Is that fair? What does it mean, fair? If she gives this take-home assessment, it will. But that doesn’t make it less. Tests T...

Musings on math and teaching. Skip to primary content. So I guess I teach HS now…. September 22, 2016. I got an email reminder, per the suggestion of Sam Shah, about my goals this year, and one of them is written reflection for myself. So here goes. I’m now 3 weeks into teaching HS and it’s… mostly really good. I feel good going to work, I feel good when students are in my room, I generally look forward to each day. Still, there’s a lot of adjusting to do. Does this grade reflect their understanding?

Multiple dimensions of teaching and learning. by Kevin Hall. How I made Khan Academy less adaptive (and way better). I want to share 2 tricks I have come up with for making Khan Academy a really great homework system. The first trick is very simple, and I’ll describe it here. The second involves a really complicated spreadsheet. But now that I’ve made it I think you should be able to start using it almost immediately. Detecting when they’ve forgotten something. Here’s a really simple trick for gett...
