Apron, Napkin: From the Annals of Too Much Free Time
http://apronnapkin.blogspot.com/2007/09/from-annals-of-too-much-free-time.html
Tuesday, September 25, 2007. From the Annals of Too Much Free Time. Come these Cheez-it Coasters. I've never been big on Cheez-its, but if I were, I would absolutely spend the requisite time and money to make these babies. My coffee table is in terrible shape. (Thanks to EDAN! Friday, June 29, 2007. Did You See Me on Good Morning America This Morning? I'm not even sure if the spot ran or not, but I was interviewed outside my local Albertsons about the recall of Veggie Booty. They just grabbed me leaving the store. I was wearing flip-flops. I meant to watch the show this morning, but then I slept in, and when I turned it on, they were doing one of those awful concert in the park type things with Bon Jovi or Seal or some other musical act I can't stand, so I turned it off. For e...

Thursday, May 24, 2007. Food Miles and Sustainability. Last week the Monterey Bay Aquarium hosted its 2nd annual Sustainable Foods Institute panel about what 'sustainable' actually means. Food writers, organic farmers, and even a few folks from Walmart. Sustainability is not something we can accomplish and be done with it. It is a matter of conscience, a moral commitment to a way to live," Kirschenmann told the group. Without question, the Earth's energy supply will dwindle, water resources will ...Food ...

Wednesday, January 31, 2007. Last Night's Dinner - Tapas. You might be saying, "Whatever happened to the Napkin. Part of this blog? You know, the part where you talk about restaurants? Yes, I do know the part to which you refer. Rest assured, it's coming. You see that list over on the left of the site called "Restaurants I'd Like to Try? Night We figured, hell the Spanish eat at ten, eleven o'clock, why not do the same? But I imagine they're all variations on the same basic ingredients):. Cut a few rashe...

Thursday, September 20, 2007. Wine for Less (or maybe a little bit more). After my trip to Mozza last Friday, I had a craving for Montelpulciano Quattro Mani, and I knew that Silverlake Wine. And Edan isn't crazy about a lot French wines, like Cote-du-Rhone, etc. You can see how this could limiting. This is the future, people. Buy stock.). Why have I gone on this tangent? Well, the New York Times posted a list of great wines for under $10. Thanks to Lisa for the link! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Middled: How do you organize your bookshelf?
http://middled.blogspot.com/2009/02/how-do-you-organize-your-bookshelf.html
Learn to live in the Middle West. Sunday, February 8, 2009. How do you organize your bookshelf? I usually just arrange my books by size with some attention to genre, including “Books I Bought But Still Haven’t Read,” which is one of the largest. A few weeks ago, Danielle came across a more aesthetic approach posted on. I think in the near future we’ll be assessing the hues and gradations of our spines, but there are other approaches. 8220; GERM Books Gallery. Began out of a need for a truly alternative i...

Learn to live in the Middle West. Tuesday, December 18, 2007. Through Snow and Space. There may have been something strange in the boiled green beans that I ate at the Tin Can on Saturday. The side dish was more than a bacony compliment to my meal—it was the start of a waking dream. The evening was lovely and dangerous. 8220;In fact,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports, “thundersnow was observed in St. Louis County.”. My friend, Shannon, and I drove to the Contemporary Art Museum.
Middled: Right At Home
http://middled.blogspot.com/2008/07/right-at-home.html
Learn to live in the Middle West. Friday, July 4, 2008. In April, I got to attend an incredibly decadent dinner party in a historic St. Louis home. I was on assignment for At Home, the home and garden arm of St. Louis Magazine. I ended up eating in the kitchen, but that turned out to be the most entertaining room in the house. The semi-celebrity French chef, Marc Felix, his assistant, Elisabeth Ottolini, and the food that they created were all delightful and impressive. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Learn to live in the Middle West. Wednesday, April 30, 2008. He only literary magazine that I've ever seen in St. Louis (and a good one at that), has just published its "Sexy" issue, which features a essay I wrote based on a conversation I had with my grandfather about his own sexiness and related themes. Unfortunately, if you're interested in perusing this fine publication, you have to buy it. The price is $8. You can purchase it locally at the locations listed here. If you have a PayPal account.
Middled: Teaching is Hard

Learn to live in the Middle West. Tuesday, July 29, 2008. As I mentioned in the last post, I’m now teaching GED and Adult. Basic Education courses at a nonprofit “education and technology center.” The students range in age from their early twenties to their late sixties and come to our center with a variety of academic and work experiences. Some never attended high school or completed a few years, but fell short of earning their diplomas. When I got to the office that day, I chatted with the administrato...

You Ever Get the Feeling: August 2008
http://youevergetthefeeling.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
You Ever Get the Feeling. There's something going on we don't know about? Saturday, August 30, 2008. For a while, I was thinking of starting a blog called "The Hater," in which I would write a post a day about something I hated. In the end, I think this is just way too much bad karma to put out into the world, so I think instead I'll just dole out the hate from here. So, fueled by a hearty dose of Joshua Brook. People who live in LA who talk about how much they miss New York City. Guys who say "bra.".

Learn to live in the Middle West. Thursday, February 21, 2008. Response to a Reader's Comment. Unfortunately, when someone comments on a post well after it was originally published, I'm probably the only person who notices. Yesterday, an anonymous reader responded to an article I wrote in November called, " Muslim St. Louis. One of the people I interviewed for that article was Dr. Khaled Hamid, a physician who has done volunteer work for the Council on American-Islamic Relations ( CAIR. In this case, I d...

Learn to live in the Middle West. Tuesday, April 21, 2009. Way back when Middled was just getting on its feet (feet that it soon will find again), my friend, Edan, wrote a great post. About some of her more mystifying encounters with the local dialects of eastern Iowa. Edan is from Los Angeles, where people talk like TV and don’t say the word “bag” as if it rhymed with “leg.”. Looking back, I recognize the early signs of trouble that seemed so innocent at the time, even funny. 8221; I asked. This pasta i...

Learn to live in the Middle West. Thursday, April 9, 2009. If you were recently wondering why Barack Obama, having been elected months ago, still hadn’t taken down his campaign posters, then you noticed Pepsi’s re-branding campaign. With a suspiciously cynical flare, the great cola maker tweaked the sunrise logo and slapped it into the word “HOPE,” promising to “refresh America.”. And also why, on my way to work, every day for the past three months, I’m reminded that I live in an urban environment,...

Friday, October 5, 2007. Some linakge for the long weekend. I haven't written much about this season of Top Chef. Pointing out that celebrity chefs rarely cook anymore (at least not on screen)? Thanks to Andy for the link.) Anyway, I thought Casey was a lead-pipe lock. I was wrong. She choked big-time in the finale, which opened the door for Hung, who put on a "See, I've got soul! Super push with his menu. But molten chocolate cake? That looked like something you could get at a Coffee Bean. I've never be...
apronnotneeded | Chef with an attitude
Chef with an attitude. A surprise for me is a surprise for you! I love when coworkers bring me in surprises and just leave them on my desk. It’s like they are challenging me to make something with it, or daring me to make something. Oh you know I will. Today I found this sitting on my desk. Stuff them? Repeat and try again! I invited my mom over to sample them. She agrees; much better. I am not Molly Malone…. Although I do like mussels and cockles! I scream, you scream… you know the rest! But the flavors...
