Though slow to start, we enjoyed this account. By the Project Architect of OMA's new Wyly Theater in Dallas, Texas. TED Talks are a mixed bag, but this one shows how the architect as lateral thinker creates something genuinely inventive. The ability to manage risk is key to making groundbreaking architecture, whether it is the form, detail or operation which is untested. We're trying to keep this in mind as we complete detailed design of the Parkkeeper's Hut, which is about to start on site.

We've enjoyed the extensive photos. Of an intervention in a Barcelona warehouse by architect Gus Wüstemann, to create spectactular living space. It feeds on a stark contrast between old and new, suggested in the title of the project, 'Cruscha Alba', which means 'white cross'. All is explained in the plan at the bottom of the page. Our office CAD package is generally good value with a bumper list of functions that serve our projects well. Unlike the engineer's favourite AutoCad, Vectorworks helps us to create 'architectural' drawings that convey the character of the designs more subtly. In the meantime, we are left having to break the model into 3D polygons, and manually rotate them to a flat plane - as for the model of the roof of the Coach House in Highgate shown here. A bit of a pain, really, for all but the simplest shape.

The Arca Shed: Shoe

At the risk of this site just being a repository for organic ribbon forms (look at our archive), we were struck by the simplicity and purity of this design. It is a shoe designed by Julian Hakes (better known for his bridge designs) which features just a single twisted strip of carbon fibre sandwiched between leather facings.
