Writing for tabletop RPGs. Tuesday, January 10, 2017. This is the first of my follow up posts to this project. Today's class is the Barbarian. The goal of this project is to create a "minigame" of sorts for each sub-class for D&D 5e that allows the character to grow in ways not directly tied to their level progression and that makes each sub-class feel unique and interesting. Path of the Berserker:. After playing with AnyDice. The real challenge is going to be finding enough things to kill/hit while ragi...

Fists of Cinder and Stone: A Digression on Archetypes and Poison Rules for Gimble
https://fistsofcinderandstone.blogspot.com/2016/08/a-digression-on-archetypes-and-poison.html
Writing for tabletop RPGs. Saturday, August 13, 2016. A Digression on Archetypes and Poison Rules for Gimble. Axe taller than her? Check Bonus points for being a dwarf. In pursuit of this I am happy to cook up anything that my players want to play. One of my players wanted to play a doctor flavored rouge, Dr. Gimble, so I whipped him up an archetype based loosely on the "Mastermind' from The Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide and modified these Poisoner's Kit rules. The game I am currently running is set in Ánemos (the Greek word for wind, or the "animating breath", it a root for for words like animate). The world is a vast stretch of sea, scattered with many small islands. The climate is very Mediterranean, meaning that it has two seasons: wet and dry. This is chiefly due to:. So any...

Fists of Cinder and Stone: Build a Better Cult
http://fistsofcinderandstone.blogspot.com/2016/11/build-better-cult.html
Writing for tabletop RPGs. Sunday, November 13, 2016. Build a Better Cult. How common is the cult trope in fantasy table top RPGs? Super common. Like every other fucking module published has some sort of weird cult in a creepy village or cultists trying to bring about the end of the world. This is the same problem that the alignment system has, why are cults always shoved into these roles? Are cults intrinsically bad? Apparently they all suck and the PCs should feel good destroying them. Obviously the li...

Jonathan Oliver - Words and that. Monday, 22 July 2013. You want it all but you can't have it.". So, I finished Erikson. And by finished I don't mean I took him round the back and finished him with a spade, no. What I mean is that I have read all ten volumes of The Malazan Book of the Fallen series that began with Gardens of The Moon. And ended with The Crippled God. Each book pretty much weighs in around a thousand pages and the whole thing tops three million words. Finally, closure! Not for one second.

Writing for tabletop RPGs. Sunday, December 11, 2016. An apprentice Lipimancer learning the pleasure of their craft. You can smell them before you see them, the sweet stench of gently rotting meat clings to them. As they waddle into view you can see their cheeks flushed too rosy, their eyes gleam with a little too much vigor, and of course their prodigious bulk is the surest sign you are dealing with the foulest and most potent of necromancers, the Lipimancer. They tried it first on rendered animal fat a...

Now you get a post on sailing and hunting magic whales for profit and fun and adventure. The Ecology of the Psári. Once they are large enough the Psári leave the reefs for the deeper waters of the channels between islands and reef shelves. This is where they begin to be the hunters, eating fish that once hunted them. At this point they are long and their t...As ad...
