The BitBox is a multi-touch arcade table using infra red, rear projection and Adobe Flash. It is a product of the Bachelors of Information Technology - Interactive Media and Design. Joint program between Carleton University. In Ottawa, Ontario. Particularly, it is the result of a 2nd year term project for Design Studio led by Dr. Anthony Whitehead. Save the cost of the projector and computer, this can be replicated for less than $200, and we'll show you how. Continue with materials list.

No lag (Max 125 FPS). Somewhat difficult to remove IR Filter. Blocks most visible light. Blocks some IR light. Note: to get the best results we used 2 pieces of exposed film as our infrared filter. 48 IR LED Cluster (x4). Easy to set up (No soldering required). Cannot be used for a FTIR setup. 24 by 18 by 1/8. Won't shatter like normal glass. Protects the diffuser sheet from being ripped. Gets dirty and scratched easily. The method we are using to create our multi-touch screen is called rear diffused illumination (RDI). This method works by shining infrared light at a diffuser. The diffuser lets most of the infrared light through, and when someone touches the screen extra light is reflected back at the camera creating a bright spot. Image from nuigroup.com. Now lets look at how to place our hardware so flash recives proper input for the touch detection and ensure that the projector displays without distortion.

BitBox - Construction Step 1

STEP 1: Build the base. Place one piece of 'A' vertically with one piece of 'B' and 'C' horozontally at its base. Using the Electric Drill, drill two holes into A at its base so that they go through A and into B. Drill two more holes on the other side of A and into C. Using the Screwdriver, screw all three pieces together through the holes that were just created. All three pieces should now be joined. Continue to step 2.
