Textiles, Dyeing and Living History
Good Gute! – Joanna Hassam
https://argentarachnid.wordpress.com/2014/11/17/good-gute
Textiles, Dyeing and Living History. The postman is my friend. Today he left a box on my front porch which contains my first samples of ancient Viking age Gute sheep wool! It appears that the squeaky wheel does get the oil or in this case the wool! It’s only a wee sample as it is going into winter in the Northern Hemisphere and not the time for shearing this ancient breed but when shearing time comes around again I am first off the rank to get some full fleeces for spinning and weaving! On the traditional dye front – Woad and Madder – Joanna Hassam

Textiles, Dyeing and Living History. On the traditional dye front – Woad and Madder. Been a bit quiet on my blog lately. Sorry about that folks. Seem to have a bit of time up my sleeve to write what I have been up too. Without further ado I would like to share the beautiful “cookie monster blue” I was able to produce with one single long dip (about a day) in the stinky woad vat. I have been getting very gradual successively lighter blues with each long day dip I do (as expected). March 3, 2015. Leave a R...
Herdwick and Black Welsh Wools – Joanna Hassam

Textiles, Dyeing and Living History. Herdwick and Black Welsh Wools. Very excited to find these two wool samples in my mailbox this morning. The grey wool is from a sheep called a Herdwick more info at this link http:/ en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herdwick. Which happens to be a breed of sheep my ancestors on my family tree from the Cumbria part of England probably would have seen regularly. Picture by Ben Holliday. They look like this. Spindle Whorl – Joanna Hassam
https://argentarachnid.wordpress.com/2014/10/20/spindle-whorl
Textiles, Dyeing and Living History. Opening up the letter box this morning I was surprised to find a smallish parcel from a good living history friend from Victoria, Australia. Josh (my friend) knows just how much I like messing around with period drop spindles and spinning period wools with them and was fortunate to come across an original spindle whorl. He then thought of me and posted off the little treasure. A good tool, works no matter the time period it would seem. October 20, 2014. October 29, 20...
Tapestry Weaving. – Joanna Hassam
https://argentarachnid.wordpress.com/2015/01/22/tapestry-weaving
Textiles, Dyeing and Living History. This is my first test tapestry I started last weekend with no cartoon, just making up the picture as I went with scraps of yarn. It turned into a nice beach, hills and sunset sky scene. I’m working on a more abstract piece above it using the remaining warp and throwing together a different sort of piece as I find out what you can and can’t do. This year, 2015, I decided to go back to classes with my weaving teacher the wonderful Bev Bills. I think I quite love being a...

Natural Dyeing: Mushrooms (Webcaps) | The Easy Blues
https://theeasyblues.wordpress.com/2014/10/17/natural-dyeing-mushrooms-webcaps
About The Easy Blues. Natural Dyeing: Mushrooms (Webcaps). There is a one area of natural dyeing that I haven’t tried yet and that is mushroom dyeing. I have never liked eating mushrooms and so I have never been really interested in mushroom picking. Also that is why I’m pretty bad at naming different types of mushrooms. Chanterelle and fly amanita where the ones I knew for sure before my great mushroom adventure. In Finnish. Kanelihelttaseitikki). I’m pretty sure these mushrooms are. I also found a few.

Every Fibre of My Being. When 140 characters just won't do. Woad betide, part the first. Well Where have *you* been? I am not supposed to be knitting. My fingers, hands and arms remind me of this dreary fact in the middle of the night, every night, and have done so for months, by waking me with either their acute numbness or their excruciating painfulness. Or, even more delightfully, both. /sarcasm. Despite doctor’s orders, I have (slowly) been knitting. I am in the midst of two. She came into our lives ...
Natural Dyeing: Black Beans (looking for the blues) | The Easy Blues
https://theeasyblues.wordpress.com/2014/09/13/natural-dyeing-black-beans-looking-for-the-blues
About The Easy Blues. Natural Dyeing: Black Beans (looking for the blues). The name of my blog is called The Easy Blues. That’s because I was listening John Martyn two months ago when I started this blog. Ironically blue is definitely not the easiest colour to achieve when talking about natural dyes. Until recently I thought it would only be possible with indigo and perhaps some mushrooms. But then I found this blog post. I didn’t get a sky blue or green (as some people have had) but a lavender colour.
Natural Dyeing: Black Beans, Part 2 | The Easy Blues
https://theeasyblues.wordpress.com/2014/10/02/natural-dyeing-black-beans-part-2
About The Easy Blues. Natural Dyeing: Black Beans, Part 2. You might remember that not so long ago I experimented with dyeing with black beans. My white wool yarns became violet and the grey yarn navy blue (below from left to right). I was a bit puzzled at the time why my yarn didn’t become sky blue as I expect to happen. Well, as you can see on the right, I did it! I changed quite a lot of factors, so I can’t be sure what was it that made the difference in the end. The other factors I changed were:.
