He's realizing that he's not actually a monster; it's just that others just perceive him as being one because he's pretty much convinced himself that he is one. I went on to reading many other books by Louis Sachar, but barely remember them. It's cool that I get this chance in college to revisit the book; it's just as cute as I remember. Jeff seemed like the nicest kid ever, and now calls Bradley by his last name, as if they were never even friends to begin with. And, to make it worse for poor Bradley, he's acting as if it.
