Life in the Armenian Diaspora. The Right to Your Name. Posted by Sarine on March 21, 2013 in Armeniana. In the past few days, I have been reflecting on my name, Quebec’s name policies, particularly for women, and how to reclaim my name – my real Armenian name, that is. I miss my name. If I were to marry, I wouldn’t want to change my name. I love my name. I just want to get the h back in my name, damnit. It seems inordinately complicated because every single document I possess has the famous k, save perha...

The Armenian-American Case – Dear Ararat
http://armo.sarinemakdessian.com/2012/05/05/the-armenian-american-case
Life in the Armenian Diaspora. Posted by Sarine on May 5, 2012 in Armeniana. An eloquent, passionate, and piercing look at the hypocritical and tenuous effects of the genocide and the politics, nay, the propaganda of the other. Also, Kricorian’s piece. Makes allusions to a number of academics/researchers in the field who have taught and shaped the genocide seminar I am hoping to attend this summer. Other posts by Sarine. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Life in the Armenian Diaspora. Posted by Sarine on November 21, 2012 in Armeniana. So I started the last post to write about the Middle East and bam, the Armenian part of me took over. I did, in fact, write about my oft forgotten, Lebanese self soon after but it became a confessional, a rambla-thon of grand proportions and I’m not sure where to go with it. After all, I need […]. Life in the Armenian Diaspora. Posted by Sarine on November 19, 2012 in Armeniana. For some time now, I have been increasingly concerned about my grasp of the Armenian language – or maintaining my quasi-fluency as fluent as you can get in grade 5 or 6 level Armenian (depends on the year you consider I left Lebanon, Syria, and Cyprus – I had interrupted school years, lived experiences, and […]. Armenian Christmas | Dear AraratDear Ararat

Life in the Armenian Diaspora. Posted by Sarine on January 6, 2013 in Armeniana. Since my Christmas falls on a weekend this year, I didn’t have to orchestrate a day off somehow. Though I do use up leftover vacation days to denote my Christmas on January 6, I’m afraid our holiday celebrations (though always small and quiet affairs) have taken on a hybrid note since immigrating to Canada. Next year, I might go all radical and forgo anything on December 25 and reclaim January 6 in its entirety. This site is...

Life in the Armenian Diaspora. Zoryan Institute and me. Posted by Sarine on April 4, 2013 in Armeniana. Last summer, I applied to and was accepted to Zoryan Institute’s annual summer genocide and human rights seminar program. I had my recommendation letters, applied, requested a leave of absence several months before, but in the end, my request to take time off work was denied. This year, I knew I’d try again.
