Apni East India Company: August 2010
http://apnieastindiacompany.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Apni East India Company. August 25, 2010. Saawan Ko Aane Do. Do (let the rains come). There are movies and movies, and a phenomenon fairly unique to Indian cinema is that most are musicals- 1 song can make/break the entire experience. Once such film is " Saawan. Do," where the story is set in rural Uttar. In a village close to Lucknow. Our protagonist Birju. A very young Amrish. Returns to the village and is enchanted by Birju. And his voice. And really, with songs like these, who wouldn't be? Songs, and...

Apni East India Company. February 26, 2010. Bolly Comedy- the 70s. We've discussed comedy on this blog before http:/ apnieastindiacompany.blogspot.com/2009/05/bollywood-comedy-i-early-years.html. The decline of the Bollywood comedian is often attributed to the rise of Amitabh Bacchan's Angry Young Man persona, but I'd argue that a lot of enviornmental factors contributed to the clearly apparent change in the quality of Bollywood cinema of the 70s. Meanwhile, there were radically opposite movies like "Pur...

Apni East India Company. September 5, 2011. The blog is suffering from issues with coding, as is obvious by its appearance. Since I am not an expert, it is taking a while to igure out. Please bear with me and feel free to suggest fixes! Links to this post. September 3, 2011. A is for . Adult Certification. Anmol Ghadi, Apur Sansar, Amanush. Who does all this? Apni East India Company: July 2011
http://apnieastindiacompany.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Apni East India Company. July 27, 2011. Title: Thanedaar (Inspector of Police). Cast: Kiran Kumar, Jeetendra, Sunjay Dutt, Jayaprada, Madhuri Dixit. Thanks to this film, I was able to remember how much fun 90s Bollywood was when it wanted to be! The movie opens with a fantabulous Kiran Kumar, evil landlord of a village. He not only rocks a topknot, he has a pigtail trailing out of it! Dilip has his own little tragic song, remembering a dead wife with his two little kids. And Sunjay's romance with Madhuri...

Apni East India Company. April 26, 2011. I'm a great one for buy a ton of movies, and then letting them gather dust until I find out something intriguing about them, and THEN watch. Title: Phir Wohi Raat (That night, again). Cast: Kim, Aruna Irani, Kajal Kiran, AK Hangal, Rajesh Khanna, Suresh Oberoi, Danny Denzongpa. Kim enters a room to meet the Wicked Witch of the West. No, scratch that- a green-faced Shashikala! Shashikala does look pretty scary, and so with a scream, Kim wakes up- it was all a dream!

Apni East India Company. February 24, 2011. Prapanch Paash/A Throw of Dice (1929). Pash/A Throw of Dice. Cast: Renee Smith/ Sita. I stumbled on this gem of a movie, and have been wanting to share for a while now- was prompted to do so asap when Memsaab. Shared its predecessor, "The Light of Asia." Of course, she has written about this one earlier as well! Renee is the daughter of a hermit/medicine man/educator played by Sarada. Used to be King Charu's. Well too bad, because Charu. See the point of it.

Apni East India Company: Agent Vinod (2012)
http://apnieastindiacompany.blogspot.com/2012/03/agent-vinod-2012.html
Apni East India Company. March 24, 2012. Ali Khan, Kareena. Refreshing to see a. Non-moralizing , nonpreaching. I'd much rather watch a film like this than Kahaani. Any day- so there! Our Indian Bond/MI combo. And he plays it with admirable restraint- can you just visualize what SRK. Would have done with it? I had a huge scare moment, when he pretends to be gay- I was ready for some cringy. But- it was cute- pretty much exactly how some of my gay friends did (and still do) act. And fit into her character.

Apni East India Company. January 26, 2011. Bollywood, the Indian North East, thoughts. If you watch Bollywood (which is why you would be even reading this), you know that the Indian movie Industry is composed of Bollywood ( movies made in Mumbai, usually in Hindi), Sandalwood (movies made in Karnataka, primarily in Kannada, Konakani, or Tullu), Tollywood (movies made in West Bengal, in Bengali), Kollywood (movies usually made in Tamil Nadu, primarily. So what's wrong with this picture? Sikkim, Tripura, M...

Apni East India Company. March 20, 2011. Parbat Pe Apna Dera. Title: Parbat Pe Apna Dera (My home is in the hills). Cast: Ulhas, Vanmala (Susheeladevi Pawar), Shanta Rin, Kamal, PL Samant, Kanta Kumari, Suman. I tend to refer to the actors by their own names, rather than the characters, so do not be confused. The priest, Ulhas, isn't too pleased to see them. He doesn't like people in general- they distract from his prayers, and so he likes to chuck rocks at them (! So much so that he has the cure for Van...
