Bob's Spring Journal

Saturday, January 14, 2017. April 2 to 14, 2002. In 2002 I extracted stills from the videos I took rather than use a camera. And then as I walked closer, a pair of black ducks took off. I moved out to the log on the point because I was expecting to see muskrats, and I did. One crossed far off in the pond - going rather fast for a rat. There were no new *****, nor much sign of beaver work around the dam, save for a small root a beaver had dug into. How did it know it was there - smell the sap in it? One t...

Bob's Spring Journal: June 25 to 30, 2003

http://arnebeckspring.blogspot.com/2014/02/june-25-to-30-2003.html

Friday, February 21, 2014. June 25 to 30, 2003. Is it possible only one otter in the group of four marks? Or is this the scat of a resident otter who has more or less been there all spring? They were on the opposite shore of the pond, their reddish fur bathed in the light of the setting sun. As well as butter and eggs, cinquefoil, and on the ridge above the meadow this elderberry bush with berries. Though there's still plenty of room for a beaver to maneuver in. Behind the dam was a fine collection o...

Bob's Spring Journal: Feb 5, 2014

http://arnebeckspring.blogspot.com/2014_02_05_archive.html

Wednesday, February 5, 2014. May 30 to June 6, 2003. But on a rock and so moist that I had to kick it to make sure it was not just mud from the trail. I decided to follow an otter's possible path up the creek. Unfortunately this spring everything is too wet, making it difficult to discern an otter path through the grass, and the creek is overflowing so there are no stretches of mud to take the impression of prints. As I crossed the dam a deer fled from the grasses below the dam, and, as usual, I could se...

Friday, January 31, 2014. May 21 to 27, 2003. Then I passed a large slug, enjoying the damp. I didn't see any scat but thought I briefly smelled some. I did get warm and enjoyed the orioles singing above me and sometimes swiftly flying in front of me. I think there were three male orioles at least around me. I admired the central position of this modest den. If I stood up I could see lower Otter Hole Pond to my right. I've noticed this before with larger dragon flies. Is it because it is easier to ge...

Bob's Spring Journal: Jul 16, 2012

http://arnebeckspring.blogspot.com/2012_07_16_archive.html

Monday, July 16, 2012. May 4 to 11, 2012. Not very effective, but they are working on it. On April 27 that spur of the dam looked rather meek. On the parts of the dam where they customarily push up mud, it was hard to judge what was recent because the whole dam looked damp from leaking the recent rains. They also put leafless shrub branches on top of the dam. In the middle of the dam they pushed up some well leaved honeysuckle branches that they cut. I wish we had noticed the flowers when they were bloom...

Beaver Dams, Ponds, Lodges and Ingenuity: Bob Arnebeck's Essays on Beavers: Beavers Gnaw and Dig Their Way Up My Valley

http://bobsbeaverdams.blogspot.com/2013/01/beavers-gnaw-and-dig-their-way-up-my.html

Beaver Dams, Ponds, Lodges and Ingenuity: Bob Arnebeck's Essays on Beavers. Thursday, January 31, 2013. Beavers Gnaw and Dig Their Way Up My Valley. On August 23, 2007, I was so enthralled by what I saw that I wrote a poem about it:. The cut winterberry, a dozen inch wide stumps. Fingering out of the moss draped roots snaking over. The black bottom of the now dry bog, pointed. The way, fifty yards through ferns, under barbed wire,. Over poplar stumps rotting dark grey. The duckweed. During the day as I w...

Excrements of Curiosity: Did a Raven Read My Mind?

http://bobarnebeck.blogspot.com/2010/10/did-raven-read-my-mind.html

Friday, October 8, 2010. Did a Raven Read My Mind? After my wife and I bought 52 acres of wild land,. We soon noticed that we were not alone. We often saw huge flocks of ravens over head. We soon learned that one neighboring farmer was also a butcher and too often dumped his waste in a neighboring ravine. We didn't appreciate that, but it did attract the ravens which we soon saw were engaging birds to watch especially when they pair off and perform indescribable aerial dances. It would not take anything ...

Beaver Dams, Ponds, Lodges and Ingenuity: Bob Arnebeck's Essays on Beavers: Beavers and Otters Learn to Get Along

http://bobsbeaverdams.blogspot.com/2013/01/beavers-and-otters-learn-to-get-along.html

Beaver Dams, Ponds, Lodges and Ingenuity: Bob Arnebeck's Essays on Beavers. Thursday, January 17, 2013. Beavers and Otters Learn to Get Along. Extinction ends the evolution of a species. Does near extinction undo co-evolution? With so few otters and beavers, did they lose their innate sense of how to co-exist? In April the beavers patched the huge hole saving their pond. In February 1997 I saw that otters dug two holes through Otter Hole Pond. In April the beavers patched it again. Now and then I took ph...

Excrements of Curiosity: Less Tanks, More Apple Pie: two encounters with Pete Seeger

http://bobarnebeck.blogspot.com/2014/01/less-tanks-more-apple-pie-two.html

Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Less Tanks, More Apple Pie: two encounters with Pete Seeger. There is something pure about an obituary: facts, garnished with quotes, sprinkled with commonly held assumptions about the obituated's influence, and when it is a non-operatic singer in question, most to the point is how Bob Dylan was influenced, though to be sure, the phrase "influenced Bob Dylan" is all that can be said because who the hell really knows. Mika liked Leslie because she was a good artist and hard work...

Beaver Dams, Ponds, Lodges and Ingenuity: Bob Arnebeck's Essays on Beavers: Death of a Beaver

http://bobsbeaverdams.blogspot.com/2012/01/death-of-beaver.html

Beaver Dams, Ponds, Lodges and Ingenuity: Bob Arnebeck's Essays on Beavers. Thursday, January 19, 2012. Death of a Beaver. There was no mistaking what happened. Double murder. The beaver killed the tree. The tree fell on the beaver. I've seen a thousand trees cut down by beavers. I never saw this before. The beaver must have died instantly. The trunk was hard and square on its head. When we came back to see the beaver the second day, we noticed that the other beavers - well, what could they do? So almost...

Animal Misbehavior: April 2011

http://animalmisbehavior.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Wild Animals Don't Always Behave the Way Books Say They Do. Tuesday, April 12, 2011. Otters can swim faster than beavers; otters have flesh tearing teeth. And beavers are vegetarians;. And most of the books you pick up about the two animals announce that otters are predators of beavers. So it is obvious, when they are in the same pond, a beaver doesn't want to get in the way of an otter. No one told the beavers all that. Kept snorting at me off and on, but also groomed itself! To find sticks to nibble.

Bob's Fall Journal: November 8 to 10, 2004

http://arnebeckfall.blogspot.com/2015/03/november-8-to-10-2004.html

Monday, March 9, 2015. November 8 to 10, 2004. November 8 yesterday we made a very brief stop at the land. The Deep Pond dam still leaks and I think the beaver pushed a little more mud up on the dam. No sign of its eating anything along the dam, no characteristic nibbled sticks. I assume that as a newcomer, it might be frightened. Meanwhile up in the poplar groove above the First Pond, the large poplar that had but a few nibbles was about to be cut down. Here is a paper on beavers and white oaks, there o...

Bob's Fall Journal: 1/6/13 - 1/13/13

http://arnebeckfall.blogspot.com/2013_01_06_archive.html

Wednesday, January 9, 2013. October 18 to 31, 1997. I wrote this in January 2013 based on hand written notes, videos and photos taken in October 1997, as well as my memory. Saturday I went out with Ottoleo. He saw some animals high on the ridge across from where we always sit at Otter Hole pond when we are waiting for otters. We couldn't decide what they were although there were at least three of them. Otters? Did not look like raccoons with such black fur. Meanwhile no otters appeared in the pond. I hav...

Bob's Calendar of Beasts, Flowers, Ponds and the River

Bob's Calendar of Beasts, Flowers, Ponds and the River. Nature in the "North Country" month by month. Wednesday, March 18, 2015. Winter bones with blood: porcupine, rabbit, turkey and deer. It looked so peaceful as if its quills had been stroked so I assume it simply starved. Some illness kept it from the nearby hemlock branches that it liked to nibble. That I wasn't going to see it perched high in a hemlock like I saw one in February 2008 made me a bit sad. I continued down Grouse Alley, which was about...

Bob's Summer Journal

Sunday, October 19, 2014. August 24 to 30, 2003. August 24 I took a quick mid-morning hike to see if the otters had left more scat. Just before I crossed the creek draining the New Pond and most of the ponds the otters fancy, I saw two gooey scats on the old rusted discarded pipe there. And poked the muck and found that it was soft and bristling with fish scales and bones. So an otter had been around. As I continued along the shore of the pond, I found some possible fisher scat. While the channels all lo...

Bob's Winter Journal

Thursday, April 2, 2015. A Still Point Below the Blow and Bother of Winter: March 12 and 22, 2015. We had to wait for a cold sunny morning after a brief thaw so that the snow would be icy enough to walk on. We were still on snowshoes. The snow in the woods is up to three feet deep. On a cold sunny morning after a brief thaw beaver ponds can begin to look rather basic. On the morning of March 12 the Lost Swamp Pond seemed to be losing it pretenses. But the most convincing evidence that the otters were sti...
