For the first image use the reflective meter in your camera to evaluate exposure and lighting contrast. For the second photograph use an incident meter. Record all metering and exposure information. A high key subject (light subject against a light background). A low key subject (dark subject against a dark background). A subject illuminated by a small light source.

The flash should be capable of manual power control and have bounce capability. For those who do not currently own a flash the Vivitar 285. Is an inexpensive, but high quality unit. Light meters should have reflective, incident, and flash capability. For those who do not own a meter the Sekonic L-308S Flashmate. Makes a good one for about $18.00. Light, Science, and Magic.
