Musings of a Casual Gatherer. Sunday, February 1, 2009. Well, yesterday was the Conflux Prerelease, which I was fortunate enough to go to. I got my packs and opened them, to discover:. SEALED POOL (84 cards). 1 Gleam of Resistance. 1 Lapse of Certainty. 1 Outrider of Jhess. 1 View from Above. 2 Voices from the Void. 1 Gift of the Gargantuan. MULTICOLORED (18 by shard – 6 Bant, 3 Esper, 2 Grixis, 5 Jund, 1 Naya, 1 Conflux). 1 Kiss of the Amesha. 1 Steward of Valeron. 1 Obelisk of Esper. Which I couldn't r...

The Magical Doack: Shards draft!
http://magicaldoack.blogspot.com/2008/10/shards-draft.html
Musings of a Casual Gatherer. Saturday, October 4, 2008. The shop that I've started going to didn't have a Shards of Alara release party, but instead, they turned last night's Friday Night Magic into a Shards of Alara booster draft, complete with promo Ajani Vengeant. S (They actually do a booster draft every other FNM, which is great because I love Limited.) Anyway, I went to that draft last night, and HERE ARE MY TALES. Another pack had Clarion Ultimatum. And a Ranger of Eos. 1 Rhox War Monk. My first ...

The Magical Doack: Shards Casual Draft
http://magicaldoack.blogspot.com/2008/12/shards-casual-draft.html
Musings of a Casual Gatherer. Monday, December 29, 2008. It's Christmastime, and that means that many of my friends are back in town for a few weeks. One of my friends, Greg, plays Magic. And has some friends who play too. So, we decided to set up a Shards draft. It occurred last night. Pack, then Godsire. Then Sedris, the Traitor King. My first pack's rare was Mycoloth. But the pack also contained Bone Splinters. I don't know. But we'll see. Greg was seated to my right, Eric playing Bant/Esper to my lef...

The Magical Doack: Shards Draft 4
http://magicaldoack.blogspot.com/2009/01/shards-draft-4.html
Musings of a Casual Gatherer. Saturday, January 10, 2009. I went down to Zombie Planet last night for another Shards draft. Unfortunately this one wasn't very interesting, but there were a few Moments Of Interest, as you'll see. Anyway…. My first pack contained an Empyrial Archangel. So it was pretty obvious I would be going Bant. Others at my table were going Bant, though, so I did have some trouble getting decent stuff. Usually my Bant decks have at least a few Rhox Charger. 1 Knight of the Skyward Eye.

The Magical Doack: September 2008
http://magicaldoack.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Musings of a Casual Gatherer. Tuesday, September 30, 2008. Shards of Alara Prerelease: DONE. I went to the Shards of Alara Prerelease on Sunday! It was awesome. To start off, I'll list my sealed pool. Some notes:. There are 86 cards: 44 from Sealed (because one was a foil Plains. And 14 from each booster. I've organized the cards by shard, but I’m not 100% sure about which cards go in which shard. Most are easy to categorize, but some I just guessed. Not sure about this one). 2x Guardians of Akrasa.

The Word of Doack: "They"
http://doackword.blogspot.com/2008/07/they.html
The Word of Doack. Tuesday, July 8, 2008. Like any diligent linguistics nut, I read Dinosaur Comics. Naturally, I therefore spend no small amount of time thinking about pronouns. Specifically, ones like "he" and "she," but more importantly, "he or she." I support the view T-Rex advances in this strip. This seems like an argument against my suggestion. However, what's so bad about context dependency? The only other argument against my position that I can think of is that proper grammar is a way to tell th...

The Magical Doack: August 2008
http://magicaldoack.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Musings of a Casual Gatherer. Sunday, August 31, 2008. Lots of people like to have control. Obviously, this is true in most aspects of life, not just Magic. But control can be a dangerous tool. Taking control of your own life is greatly empowering, but control of others often leads to corruption. And this relates to Magic. This may all seem familiar. I made similar complaints when talking about combo decks, about how they reduce fun by reducing options. Does this mean I only like aggro decks? I have been...

The Magical Doack: October 2008
http://magicaldoack.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Musings of a Casual Gatherer. Saturday, October 18, 2008. I managed to go to another Shards of Alara draft! Hurray for me. Here are my tales. There were 25 people, and we were going to be drafting at tables of 6/6/6/7, but some people wanted larger tables, so it ended up being 8/8/9, and I was at one of the 8. I'm not superstitious, but I like to pretend that I am, so I decide the order in which to open my packs based on the art. My three boosters had art of Hellkite Overlord. On my second pick, so I sna...
