The common brine shrimp (artemia) is in the phylum Arthropoda, class Crustacea. It commonly is used as feeds for larval and post larval shrimp and fish. Artemia are zooplankton like Copepods and Daphnia, which are also used for live food in the aquarium. The artemia life cycle begins by the hatching of dormant cysts, which are encased embryos that are metabolically inactive. The cysts can remain dormant for many years as long as they are kept dry and oxygen free.

A cone shaped or conical bottomed vessel should be used as the hatching container. This is used to maintain the cysts in suspension when aeration is applied at the bottom and to avoid any dead spots . Hatching water should have a salinity of 20ppt or specific gravity of 1,010 to 1,020. Hatching water should have a pH in the range of 8.0 to 8.5. This can be maintained by adding a small amount of bicarbonate to the hatching water prior to adding the artemia cysts. Artemia may be harvested after 18 24 hours.
