I wondered what motivated you to start the blog, and if you felt any pressure for self-censorship due to the sensitivities of any governments or funding sources. On February 25, 2008. Misery in Paradise | Bob In Timor-Leste
https://timorjournal.wordpress.com/2008/11/16/misery-in-paradise
An account of life and work in the Pacific. November 16, 2008. The litany of misfortune goes on and on, much of it driven by poverty and ignorance – a bit over half of women and just over 40% of men are illiterate. Dependency rates are very high, with only about 36.6% of the population making up the labor force. Laquo; Climbing Ramelau. What should the new administration do? Can we, through engagement with the UN make a difference? On December 4, 2008. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

Magnificent Frigate birds | Bob In Timor-Leste
https://timorjournal.wordpress.com/2008/08/30/magnificent-frigate-birds
An account of life and work in the Pacific. August 30, 2008. Frigate birds do not migrate, and I am hopeful that these have taken up residence in my part of the north coast. There is a nesting pair of Osprey (Sea Hawks) nearby, and it will be interesting to see if they can all manage to share sea and sky. Laquo; Under the Southern Cross. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Transportation | Bob In Timor-Leste
https://timorjournal.wordpress.com/pictures
An account of life and work in the Pacific. This is my transportation, a Honda motorbike manufactured in China. It has a decal on the side (very flashy) that I think should say “Flash.” Unfortunately, it says “Flush.” But the motorbike and I are getting along fine. On April 27, 2008. Howdy Bob…it’s been nice to check up on you and your wayward ways so far away. I guess it will be awhile before you return for some more bike rides. It’ll be tough without Flush. On April 30, 2008. Climbing Ramelau | Bob In Timor-Leste
https://timorjournal.wordpress.com/2008/10/31/climbing-ramelau
An account of life and work in the Pacific. October 31, 2008. Near the top, we hiked through an area of small scrubby trees scattered around, and tough coarse grass on the ground. The temperature had been dropping as we climbed, although I didn’t notice while we were actually climbing because of the exercise. But in the shadows, the coarse grass was covered by frost, an improbable sight in the tropics. I had to touch the frost to be convinced. Laquo; Magnificent Frigate birds. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

An account of life and work in the Pacific. March 21, 2009. Fast forward a few months, and I am back in Washington DC, sitting by the fire on a colder-than-usual spring afternoon. I returned from Timor-Leste in late December, and am missing the warm trade winds, even though this is the rainy season in Timor-Leste. Warm and wet feels much better than cold and damp. Next month, I will be in Liberia, doing a study to find culturally (and nutritionally) suitable alternatives to the hunting and consumption of...

Seasons Change | Bob In Timor-Leste
https://timorjournal.wordpress.com/2008/06/08/seasons-change
An account of life and work in the Pacific. June 8, 2008. Timor-Leste is now solidly in the Austral winter, with clear skies, cool early mornings and hot, sunny afternoons. It is harvest time, and the markets are full of vegetables and fruits, and coffee is being harvested in the mountains. After seven hours of bucketing up and down the mountains, we finally hit the beach road and rode back to Dili. The Way of Death. On June 14, 2008. On June 15, 2008. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
