It has been reported that archaeologists have unearthed an artificial eye that is believed to be 5,000 years old. It was worn by a female believed to have lived in ancient Arabia; she was aged between 25 and 30 years. This is the earliest prosthetic eye ever found. Mansour Sajjadi discovered it in the desert on the border of Afghan and Iran. It was not until 1579 that the Venetians started making prosthetic eyes from glass. These eyes were very heavy and uncomfortable to wear.

Today's prosthetic eyes are fully custom made to match the wearer's companion eye and are manufactured with acrylic throughout, including paint, iris, and sclera (the white of the eye). On your first visit to the Cos-Medic eye laboratory, two major steps take place. Firstly, a shape is determined of your prosthetic eye. Then your iris colour is hand painted onto an iris button. This button can be applied with up to twenty coats of paint to achieve the correct colour and detail.

The Danz family comes from Lauscha, Germany, in the state of Thuringen. The first handblown glass eyes were made. There, based on the existing glass blowing technology in that area. Making eyes in glass is an exacting art and science, requiring a high level of skill. These techniques have been passed down in the Danz family, with continual development and enhancement, and are now used to create custom fitted ocular prosthetics in modern plastic.
