While visiting in Virginia Ashley was stricken with a brain injury. Her symptoms did not point to a conclusive diagnosis. Within a week the concensus was acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) a neurological disorder characterized by inflammation of the brain and spinal cord caused by damage to the myelin sheath. Myelin insulates the neurofibers that carry signals throughout the brain. Myelin can regrow, but the amount and time varies in each case.

Ashley's Bout with Auto-Immune Disease. Tuesday, January 1, 2013. Since Ashley was stricken on June 29, 2007 the end of the calendar year marks the 5.5 year mark of her recovery. With God’s blessing Ashley continues to make progress. The most dramatic visual progress is her ability to transfer from the bed to her wheelchair all by herself. Most mornings dad brings Ashley downstairs from her bedroom and she catches a bit more sleep in the bed still in the living room until she and mom begin their day.

Ashley has a lot of activity to catch up on. Let’s get to it! In June Ashley’s insurance for physical and occupational therapy was discontinued. That may sound like a setback. In reality it is not. First of all we have not known anyone that has had more daily therapy than Ashley. She loves the facility and the staff.
