A Shot At Books: “Havana Harbor” by Martin Cruz Smith
http://books-expert.blogspot.com/2011/05/havana-harbor-by-martin-cruz-smith.html
A Shot From The Hip. Sunday, May 1, 2011. 8220;Havana Harbor” by Martin Cruz Smith. The author of "Gorky Park" brings back the Russian investigator Arkady Renko. This time he is in Havana trying to figure out the death of his friend (and worst enemy) another Russian that worked for the Russian government in Cuba. All in all I highly recommend this book. A Shot At Books: “Life and Fate” by Vasily Grossman
http://books-expert.blogspot.com/2011/05/life-and-fate-by-vasily-grossman.html
A Shot From The Hip. Monday, May 2, 2011. 8220;Life and Fate” by Vasily Grossman. I liked this book, though it’s sometimes a hard read – sort of like Tolstoy’s “War and Peace”. The writer was the second most respected and famous Soviet war correspondent during the Second World War with Ilya Ehrenburg being the first. This is not a history book, rather it deals with the fate of the members of a single extended family, their friends and relatives. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). 12/18 - 12/25 (1).

A Shot At Books: "Portrait of a Spy" by Daniel Silva
http://books-expert.blogspot.com/2011/12/portrait-of-spy-by-daniel-silva.html
A Shot From The Hip. Wednesday, December 21, 2011. Portrait of a Spy" by Daniel Silva. This is a book in the series dealing with the "legendary" Israeli spy Gabriel Alon. The book reads fairly well, though the action is a bit slow. The only fault I found with this book is the main character and the actual "spying" operations. The character is weird, to say the least, and absolutely impossible. The operational planing and execution are as weird and unlikely. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

A Shot At Books: “Dayworld” by Philip Jose Farmer
http://books-expert.blogspot.com/2011/05/dayworld-by-philip-jose-farmer.html
A Shot From The Hip. Sunday, May 1, 2011. 8220;Dayworld” by Philip Jose Farmer. Farmer has a strange and creative imagination, but in this case he created something so unlikely that I had to work very hard to suspend disbelief. Would you believe that people everywhere will voluntarily agree to live only one day a week? In any case, I enjoyed the book. Of course, not everybody agrees with me. A good example is at http:/ www.pjfarmer.com/reviews.htm#dayw. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

A Shot At Books: “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand
http://books-expert.blogspot.com/2011/05/atlas-shrugged-by-ayn-rand.html
A Shot From The Hip. Sunday, May 1, 2011. 8220;Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. The book is written as a novel and as such it is lousy. The plot is slow in developing, the descriptions are long and boring and most of the dialogs are likewise long and boring. All of the above makes for slow and difficult reading. Al in all a difficult read not because of the intellectual heights it soars to but because of the way it’s written. If you don’t mind investing some time and effort it may be worth tr...

A Shot At Books: "Hitler's War" by Harry Turtledove
http://books-expert.blogspot.com/2011/05/hitlers-war-by-harry-turtledove.html
A Shot From The Hip. Wednesday, May 25, 2011. Hitler's War" by Harry Turtledove. This is actually a trilogy of which I read the first two books: "Hitler's War" and "West and East". The premise is simple: what if Chamberlain and Deladier refuse Hitler's demands at the Munich conference? All in all it's not a bad series of books and I'm looking forward to reading the third one in the trilogy. A Shot From The Hip. Sunday, May 1, 2011. 8220;Secret Servant” by Daniel Silva. Al in all an enjoyable book but don’t look too deep under the surface you may find holes in the plot. A Shot At Books: “The Final Theory” by Mark Alpert
http://books-expert.blogspot.com/2011/05/final-theory-by-mark-alpert.html
A Shot From The Hip. Sunday, May 1, 2011. 8220;The Final Theory” by Mark Alpert. Mr Alpert definitely knows how to write an action thriller. If you don’t analyze the action too much (and why would you? This is a gripping book. Things happen all the time. The day (and the world) is saved, eventually. I enjoyed reading this book.
