Tom's Watchmaking Blog. What’s in a mill…. Saturday, Mar 31 2012. My mill. not quite perfect as it is. Due to popular demand, another blog post! Well ok, a couple of people asked me about this). When I bought my milling machine, I was limited largely by the amount of money I had to spend, my understanding of what I wanted to do, and my limited (at the time) understanding of what different mills were capable of doing. At the time I believed the Sherline could fill all these requirements and more! Machine ...

Tom's Watchmaking Blog. Many hands. and a Pretty Face. Sunday, Oct 30 2011. The design brief I gave myself for the hands and dial of the watch were fairly straight forward, I wanted it to be easily readable, while being a bit “special”. The hand design was basically set as soon as I saw this clock, all that I had to do was reduce the size, and decide on the material to be used. The inspiration for my hands. Silver and Titanium hands - Pre-polishing. Silver and Titanium hands side by side -Post polishing.

Tom's Watchmaking Blog. 30th December – Start My Engines…. Sunday, May 22 2011. I started machining as soon as possible, a process of around 8 hours solid. only to find that I had gotten confused when translating my measurements to the computer, because of this the recess that holds the barrel was machined too deep, this has the effect of not leaving enough material for the centre wheel jewel to seat into, and also removing some material around the setting mechanism. Not good! Perspex Jig to hold plates.

The #watchnerd: April 2013
http://noodlefish.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
The watch 'blog you can safely ignore. Monday, April 29, 2013. Before I begin, I feel the need to apologise: this article has taken. Too long to write, and also contains. Too many hanging prepositions. Then in 2007, I thought that I might actually start to do something a little more. Settling on watches was relatively easy; my interest had been piqued some time before, perhaps ignited by William Gibson’s 1999 Wired. But how to begin? Documented so brilliantly in The Man Who Ate Everything. Of Meridian Wa...

The watch 'blog you can safely ignore. Tuesday, July 09, 2013. Keeping up with the Jones'. A few weeks ago I had dinner with an Australian Twitter pal who was wearing a watch called the Time Traveller. From UK brand, Mr Jones Watches. It's a limited edition of 100 pieces with a rather ingenious 24hr world timer function, using a single rotating dial. The Mayfly-themed packaging for MJW (C) Fanny Shorter. Ceramicist Shan Annabelle Valla. And illustrator Fanny Shorter. MJW's Tour du Monde. The latter depic...

The watch 'blog you can safely ignore. Tuesday, November 20, 2012. SalonQP 2012 Part 2 - Prime time. The Meridian Watches MP-09. Due to a slight delay at the entrance to the the Saatchi Gallery (the security guards waited for the clock to strike six before letting any of us in to SalonQP. I missed the official launch of Meridian Watches. A special non-luminous dial for SalonQP 2012. Fame) and even a leather passport holder (from Bond Street brand, Smythson. The Meridian Black treatment on the MP-09.

The watch 'blog you can safely ignore. Sunday, September 23, 2012. As you walk down Bond Street, past the rather spooky life-casted windows of Louis Vuitton, and the tourists sitting with Winston Churchill, there's a bright, glass-filled window on the right-hand side. The door is overlooked by a red awning and framed by a flag bearing the name of the owner in a distinctive, stylised font. The store is Marcus. Its owner Marcus Margulies; and it sells dreams. The Union Pocket Watch by AP. Marcus purchased ...

The watch 'blog you can safely ignore. Thursday, June 27, 2013. Rather impressed with this. Not only did Bremont. Put on an extremely fun (and generous) event*, but they failed to disappoint when it came to the big reveal. I was only able to see the watch though the various glass displays dotted around the grounds of Bletchley Park, but a few things stood out to this #watchnerd:. Like the National Museum of the Royal Navy. The last survivor of the cryptanalysts who worked on Tunny. The case and bezel.

The watch 'blog you can safely ignore. Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Pebble's wearable tech, via @GreatDismal. I wrote about the MetaWatch. An interesting piece of wearable tech that appeared to be struggling with its Bluetooth power consumption for a while, but now appears to be focusing on "reinventing the watch as a stylish and relevant mobile accessory." In the meantime, the phenomenon that is Pebble. Took the world by storm, drumming up millions on Kickstarter. How is battery life on it? I like the ...

The watch 'blog you can safely ignore. Sunday, December 30, 2012. Salon QP 2012: Part 3 - Sarpaneva Watches. One of the most enjoyable aspects of SalonQP 2012 was being able to spend time with some of the people behind the watches that we 'blog, Tweet or write about, such as Finnish watchmaker, Stepan Sarpaneva. I'd been hoping to meet Stepan for a number of years, as he has quietly been making some of my favourite watches, such as the Korona K0. Opposite) is perhaps the most extreme of his pieces - the ...

The watch 'blog you can safely ignore. Sunday, July 28, 2013. Six Small Words: Historic (1/6). This is the first in a series of posts inspired by six words that are used by the late Dr George Daniels to describe watches in The Watchmaker’s Apprentice: historic; intellectual; technical; aesthetic; useful; and amusing. The Watchmaker's Apprentice is a documentary about the lives of Roger Smith and Dr George Daniels by DAM Productions. A version premiered at SalonQP. Of or concerning history; of the past.
